The ASUS RT-AX1800S is a dual-band WiFi 6 router for homes with a growing number of connected devices. It uses the 802.11ax standard, has four external antennas and five Gigabit Ethernet ports, and can be joined with other ASUS routers to build a mesh network.
What WiFi 6 changes
WiFi 6 (802.11ax) is aimed at busy networks rather than only at headline speed. ASUS points to two features. MU-MIMO lets the router talk to several devices at once instead of one after another. OFDMA divides a channel into smaller parts so that many devices, including small smart-home gadgets, can share it efficiently. ASUS also lists 1024-QAM, a more compact way of encoding data that it says gives faster connections, and 80MHz channel bandwidth.
The RT-AX1800S is described as a 2x2 dual-band router. Dual band means it offers both the 2.4GHz band, which reaches further, and the 5GHz band, which is typically faster at shorter range. The "1800" in the name is a combined theoretical figure and real speeds are lower, depending on your devices, distance and walls.
Ports and hardware
On the back are one Gigabit WAN port for your modem and four Gigabit LAN ports for wired devices such as a computer, console or TV box. ASUS notes that Gigabit is ten times faster than 100-Base T Ethernet. Wired connections are usually the steadiest option for fixed devices. The router has a dual-core processor and runs from a 12V power adapter (up to 1.5A) that accepts 110-240V mains.
Security and parental controls
ASUS includes AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro, which it describes as commercial-grade protection for the home network, and says it has no subscription fee. Instant Guard provides a one-click VPN for when you are away from home. Parental controls are also listed. As with any router, keeping the firmware updated and using a strong admin password matter at least as much as the features.
Extending with AiMesh
AiMesh lets you add another AiMesh-compatible ASUS router to extend coverage with a single network name and seamless roaming between units. This helps if one router can't cover a larger or multi-storey home. Check the AiMesh compatibility list for the specific model you plan to pair.
Who it suits
It suits households that want a current-generation WiFi standard for streaming, video calls, gaming and smart-home devices, and that don't need very high internet plan speeds. Because the Ethernet ports are Gigabit, it fits internet plans up to roughly 1 Gbps over wire.
What to check before you buy
- Your internet plan: confirm your provider's speed and whether you need a separate modem, since this is a router.
- Your devices: WiFi 6 benefits require WiFi 6 devices; older devices still connect but at their own speeds.
- Home size and layout: large homes or thick walls may need a mesh pairing.
- Wired needs: count how many devices need Ethernet, given four LAN ports.
- Setup and updates: follow the manual for setup and keep the firmware up to date.
