The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Pro is a tri-band WiFi 6 router built for gaming households with many connected devices. It adds a 10G port and a 2.5G port, a quad-core processor and traffic prioritisation for online games. Here is what those terms mean and who this kind of router suits.
What tri-band WiFi 6 means
WiFi 6 is the generation also called 802.11ax. It was designed to handle many devices at once more efficiently than earlier standards. A tri-band router has three radio bands rather than two: typically one 2.4 GHz band and two 5 GHz bands. Spreading devices across the bands reduces congestion.
ASUS quotes speeds up to 11,000 Mbps, which is the combined theoretical figure across all bands. No single device will reach that number, and ASUS itself notes that real throughput and coverage vary with network traffic, building materials and construction. The router also supports 160 MHz channels, which are wider channels that can carry more data to devices that support them. ASUS says it handles up to eight simultaneous WiFi streams.
The 10G and 2.5G ports
One 10G port and one 2.5G port can each be set as either WAN (the internet connection) or LAN (a local device). That flexibility matters if your internet service or network storage runs faster than the 1 Gbps of standard Ethernet. A 2.5G or 10G WAN connection only helps if your provider supplies it, and a 10G LAN link is only useful if the device at the other end supports it too.
Processor and range
ASUS fits a 64-bit 2.0 GHz quad-core CPU alongside high-performance WiFi chipsets, which handles wireless processing and features such as prioritisation. ASUS RangeBoost Plus is the company's name for technology that improves signal range and coverage. As always, walls, floors and distance affect the result.
Game acceleration
The router offers triple-level game acceleration, which ASUS describes as giving online gaming network priority from the PC to the game server. In general, this kind of feature (often called QoS) works by giving gaming traffic first place in the queue when several devices compete for bandwidth. It can't fix a slow or unstable internet connection.
Network security and AiMesh
ASUS lists subscription-free network security. It is also AiMesh compatible, meaning it can be combined with other compatible ASUS routers into a mesh network with a single network name, which is useful for larger homes.
Power supply, size and weight
The power supply accepts 110V to 240V at 50 to 60 Hz, so it works with mains power in most regions, and it outputs 19V or 19.5V DC. The router measures 13.9 x 13.9 x 7.6 inches (about 35 x 35 x 19 cm) and weighs 4.8 lb (about 2.2 kg). It's a large unit with an upright antenna design, so it needs open shelf space.
Who it suits
It suits households with several gamers, streamers and smart-home devices, and anyone with a multi-gigabit connection or a fast home server. A small apartment with a modest internet plan may not need this much hardware.
What to check before you buy
- Your internet speed: check whether your service can use a 2.5G or 10G WAN port.
- Your devices: WiFi 6 and 160 MHz benefits require compatible laptops, consoles and phones.
- Wired devices: count the LAN ports you need.
- Home layout: consider whether a mesh with AiMesh would be needed for coverage.
- Placement: allow open space for the antennas and airflow.
- Setup: look at the manual for the app or web interface used to configure it.
