The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 is a tri-band Wi-Fi router aimed at gaming households with many connected devices. It combines a quad-core processor, eight wired Gigabit ports and two separate 5 GHz bands, plus a software dashboard with gaming-focused tools.

What "AC5300" and tri-band mean

AC5300 is a marketing label that adds up the top speeds of all three radio bands. ASUS lists a combined 5334 Mbps, split across one 2.4 GHz band and two 5 GHz bands, using 802.11ac with 4x4 MU-MIMO. Those figures are theoretical totals. No single device gets that speed, and real-world results depend on distance, walls, interference and what your devices support.

The benefit of a second 5 GHz band is room for more traffic. Devices can be spread over both bands, so a console or gaming PC on one doesn't compete with a streaming box and phones on the other. MU-MIMO lets a router talk to several compatible devices at once instead of one after another. ASUS rates coverage at up to 5,000 square feet, which depends heavily on the building.

The processor and ports

Inside is a 1.8GHz 64-bit quad-core processor. A faster router processor typically helps when it has to manage many connections, run security features and handle traffic on several ports together. The router has eight Gigabit LAN ports and two USB 3.0 ports, so consoles, PCs, a network storage drive or a printer can connect without a separate switch. ASUS says prioritized ports and a gaming-dedicated 5 GHz band are part of the design. Wired connections are generally steadier than Wi-Fi, which is why many gamers use them.

Gaming and security features

The ROG Game Dashboard gathers several tools in one screen:

  • Game Boost, which prioritises gaming traffic.
  • Game IPS, powered by Trend Micro, which ASUS says gives multi-stage protection against external attacks and threats.
  • VPN Fusion, available through a firmware update, which runs a VPN connection and an ordinary connection side by side on different devices.
  • WTFast Gamers Private Network, a route-optimised server service for lower ping in supported games.

The listing also mentions lifetime internet security. Check the details of any bundled service in ASUS's documentation.

Whole-home Wi-Fi with AiMesh

AiMesh support lets you link this router with other compatible ASUS routers, after a firmware upgrade, to build one network with a single name. That helps in larger homes where one router can't reach every room. Check ASUS's AiMesh compatibility list for the other models you'd pair it with. The router also supports 1024-QAM and 20/40/80 MHz channel widths.

Internet connection types

For the connection to your provider, the router lists Automatic IP, Static IP, PPPoE (MPPE supported), PPTP and L2TP. Most home internet services work with one of these. It has a built-in power adapter input of 110V to 240V and a 19V DC output rated up to 3.42A. The unit measures 11.5 x 4.7 x 14.9 inches including its antennas.

Who it suits

It suits households with many simultaneous users, gamers who prefer wired connections, and people planning an AiMesh network. If you have only a few devices or a small flat, a simpler router may do the job.

What to check before you buy

  • Wi-Fi generation: this is an 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) router; check whether your newer devices support later standards.
  • Your internet plan: the router can't exceed what your provider delivers.
  • Modem: you will usually need a separate modem unless your provider's device is set to bridge mode.
  • Space: it's tall and has external antennas, so find an open spot.
  • Mesh plans: confirm any extra AiMesh routers are compatible.
  • Firmware: some features, such as VPN Fusion and AiMesh, arrive through firmware updates.

The short version

  • Tri-band AC5300 router, with a listed 5334 Mbps combined top speed.
  • 1.8GHz quad-core CPU, eight Gigabit LAN ports and two USB 3.0 ports.
  • ROG Game Dashboard with Game Boost, Game IPS, VPN Fusion and WTFast.
  • AiMesh support for whole-home coverage with other compatible ASUS routers.
