The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AC2900 is a dual-band Wi-Fi router designed for gaming and streaming. It combines game-traffic prioritisation, Aura RGB lighting and built-in network security. ASUS says it is built for busy homes where many devices share one connection. Here is what its features mean.

What AC2900 means

AC2900 refers to the Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) standard and is a combined figure for the theoretical top speeds of its two bands, 2.4GHz and 5GHz. No single device reaches the total. A phone or laptop connects to one band at a time and is limited by its own radio. The figure is mainly a way to compare routers within the same generation.

Triple-level game acceleration

ASUS describes triple-level game acceleration as optimising gaming packets all the way from the PC to the game server. In general, this kind of feature prioritises game traffic over downloads and video on the same network. How much difference it makes depends on your internet service, the game's servers and how busy your network is.

The router is listed as recommended for NVIDIA GeForce NOW, the cloud gaming service. Cloud gaming streams video from a remote server, so it relies on a steady, low-delay connection. A router that handles that traffic well helps, but the quality of your internet connection matters most.

AiMesh for whole-home coverage

AiMesh lets compatible ASUS routers link up as one whole-home Wi-Fi system. You can add a second compatible router in a distant room so devices roam between them under a single network name. Check ASUS's list of compatible models before pairing.

AiProtection Pro

The listing says lifetime free AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro, protects connected devices from internet threats. Features of this type work at the router and typically block known malicious sites and flag suspicious traffic. They complement, not replace, up-to-date software on your devices.

Aura lighting

ASUS Aura lighting offers multiple effects, and can be set to reflect the status of your network. It can be turned off if you prefer a plain look.

Size and power

The router measures 13.9 x 9.6 x 4.3 inches (about 35 x 24 x 11 cm) with a weight of 1.7 lb (about 0.8 kg). The power adapter accepts 110-240V and 50-60Hz, with a 19V DC output at up to 1.75A.

Who it suits

It suits households with gamers, streamers and many connected devices that want gaming features without moving to Wi-Fi 6. It does not use the newer Wi-Fi 6 standard, so check that against your devices and internet plan.

What to check before you buy

  • Internet plan: make sure the router's wired ports and Wi-Fi are suitable for your connection speed.
  • Coverage: consider your home's size and layout, and whether you would add an AiMesh node.
  • Devices: this is a Wi-Fi 5 router, so confirm the standards your devices use.
  • Placement: it has external antennas, so leave open space around it.
  • Setup: check the manual for app and firmware steps.
  • Lighting: confirm the Aura effects can be switched off if that matters.
