The ASUS ROG NUC (2025), model RNUC15JNK9X489AU, is a compact gaming desktop that packs a laptop-class Intel Core Ultra 9 processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 mobile graphics chip into a case of about three litres. It is meant for people who want gaming and creative performance without a full tower on the desk.
What is inside
ASUS lists an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX from the Series 2 line, an RTX 5070 mobile GPU, 32GB of DDR5-6400 memory and a 1TB NVMe SSD. The "HX" suffix typically marks Intel's high-performance mobile chips, which share a design with those used in gaming laptops. ASUS cites up to 200+ platform TOPS, a measure of AI-processing throughput across the CPU, GPU and neural processing unit, and a generation-over-generation gain of up to 18%.
What the RTX 5070 mobile GPU does
The graphics chip handles games and creative applications. NVIDIA's DLSS technology, which ASUS highlights, uses AI to render a game at a lower internal resolution and upscale it, usually raising frame rates. Mobile GPUs generally run at lower power limits than desktop cards of the same name, so performance differs between the two; compare like with like when you look at benchmarks.
Cooling in a small case
Small cases are hard to keep cool. ASUS says its QuietFlow design uses three fans and a dual vapour chamber to keep temperatures down while holding noise to a minimum. A vapour chamber spreads heat from the chips across a larger surface, where fans can carry it away. Actual noise depends on the workload and the room.
Upgrades and connections
The case measures 7.4 x 2.2 x 11.1 inches and weighs 6.9 lb (about 3.1 kg). ASUS describes thumb screws that give tool-free access for memory and storage upgrades. Connectivity includes Thunderbolt 4, and the description states support for five 4K displays, which suits multi-monitor desks and creative workstations.
Lighting and design
The case has ARGB lighting that ASUS says you can personalise through Aura Sync, with a top-mounted power button. Aura Sync can coordinate colours with other compatible ASUS gear.
Who it suits
This is for gamers and creators with limited desk space, people who move a PC between rooms, and anyone who wants a compact machine for video editing, 3D work or AI tasks. It is a barebones-style form factor, so you will want your own monitor, keyboard and mouse.
What to check before you buy
- Peripherals: confirm you have a display, keyboard, mouse and any audio gear.
- Display connections: check which video outputs you need and that your monitors match.
- Power and placement: check the manual for power-supply details and ventilation clearance around the case.
- Noise: compact, powerful machines can get loud under load; consider where it will sit.
- Upgrades: check which memory and storage parts the manual says are compatible.
- Software and warranty: confirm the operating system and warranty terms with the brand.
