The ASUS NUC 15 Pro Tall is a barebones mini PC: a small computer with the processor and main board already built in, but without memory, storage or an operating system. At about 4.6 x 4.4 x 2.1 inches (12 x 11 x 5 cm) and 0.8 lb (0.4 kg), it suits desks and shelves where a full tower would be too much.

What "barebones" means

A barebones kit gives you the chassis, the board and the processor. You add your own DDR5 memory and storage, then install an operating system. The upside is that you choose the capacity and speed of each part. The trade-off is that the unit won't start until you've supplied them, so check what's in the box and allow some time for assembly.

ASUS lists support for up to 96GB of DDR5 in dual-channel configuration. Dual-channel simply means two memory modules working in parallel, which typically gives higher memory bandwidth than a single module.

The processor

The kit uses the Intel Core 7 240H from Intel's Series 2 range, with integrated Intel graphics. ASUS describes it as AI-optimised and mentions NPU support for AI workloads. An NPU is a dedicated block for certain machine-learning tasks, and software has to be written to use it, so how much it helps depends on the applications you run. The integrated graphics handle everyday display work and video; they are not a substitute for a separate graphics card in demanding games.

Storage, access and upgrades

The listing calls it a dual storage design, meaning it can take two drives. ASUS also describes a toolless chassis: the case opens without a screwdriver, which makes installing memory and drives quicker. A VESA mount is included, so the PC can attach to the back of a compatible monitor or a wall.

Connectivity and displays

Wireless is Intel Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. ASUS says Wi-Fi 7 offers up to 2.4 times faster transfer rates, though real speeds depend on your router, which needs to support Wi-Fi 7 too. ASUS also lists Wi-Fi Proximity Sensing.

For screens, the PC can drive four 4K displays through HDMI 2.1 and Thunderbolt 4 ports. Thunderbolt 4 carries video, data and power over one USB-C connector, so a single cable can link a compatible dock or monitor. ASUS mentions headless emulation, which lets the PC behave as if a display were connected when none is, useful for remote or server-style use, and a sync power-off feature that turns the screen off with the PC.

Reliability and cooling

ASUS says the NUC 15 Pro is designed for 24/7 operation, tested under what it calls rigorous torture testing, and certified to MIL-STD-810H, a US military test standard covering environmental conditions. It also describes an advanced cooling system to maintain performance, and packaging made with sustainability in mind.

Who it suits

A mini PC like this fits a home office, a media or home-server setup, a reception or point-of-information desk, or any workspace that needs a quiet, small computer without much cabling. It's less suited to people who want a gaming card upgraded later.

What to check before you buy

  • This is barebones: you need DDR5 memory (SODIMM modules, typically, in a machine this size; confirm in the manual), at least one storage drive, and an operating system.
  • Which drive types and sizes the two storage slots accept.
  • That your displays have the right inputs (HDMI or USB-C) for the ports available.
  • Whether your router supports Wi-Fi 7, or whether you'll use a wired connection.
  • Which power adapter and cables are included in your region.
  • That the VESA pattern on your monitor matches the included mount.

The short version

  • Barebones mini PC with an Intel Core 7 240H and integrated graphics.
  • Supports up to 96GB of dual-channel DDR5 and two drives.
  • Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, HDMI 2.1 and Thunderbolt 4 for up to four 4K displays.
  • Toolless chassis, VESA mount included, MIL-STD-810H certification claimed by ASUS.
  • You supply the memory, storage and operating system.
