The ASUS ExpertWiFi EBR63 is a WiFi 6 (AX3000) router designed for small businesses such as shops, cafés and small offices. Unlike a typical home router, it focuses on separating networks, branding a guest login page and managing the network from an app. ASUS also says it can grow with other ExpertWiFi products as the business expands.

What AX3000 and WiFi 6 mean

WiFi 6 (802.11ax) is a wireless standard designed to handle many connected devices more efficiently than older generations. "AX3000" is a combined speed class: the figure adds the maximum theoretical speeds of its bands. Real throughput is lower, and ASUS notes that actual speed and coverage vary with network traffic, building materials and construction.

Separate networks with up to five SSIDs

The router supports up to five SSIDs, which are separate wireless network names. A business can, for example, put staff devices, point-of-sale equipment and guests on different networks and prioritise each for its purpose. Keeping them apart is a common way to limit what each group of devices can reach. The listing also names VLAN support, which is a related way to divide traffic.

Custom guest portal

The guest portal lets you customise the SSID, the portal type, the brand name and the page template, so visitors see a login or welcome page that matches your business. ASUS also mentions SDN (software-defined networking) support, which in general allows network policies to be managed centrally and applied to different groups.

Backup WAN over USB

The router's USB port can serve as a backup WAN connection: plug in a mobile phone with a hotspot, and the router can use it to keep the business online if the main internet connection drops. Check the manual for supported phones and the data limits on your mobile plan.

Security and management

ASUS says a free subscription to AiProtection Pro and safe browsing features is included, along with VPN support. The ExpertWiFi app handles setup and day-to-day management, including remote management, which may suit owners without a dedicated IT person. Keep the firmware up to date as ASUS recommends.

Size

The router measures 5.0 x 5.7 x 8.6 inches (about 13 x 14.5 x 22 cm) and weighs 0.9 lb (about 0.4 kg).

Who it suits

It suits small businesses, studios and offices that want a managed guest network, separated device groups and a simple app, without a full enterprise setup.

What to check before you buy

  • Coverage: one router may not cover a large or multi-storey space; ASUS mentions AIMesh to extend it.
  • Internet connection: confirm your modem or fibre terminal works with the router's WAN port.
  • Device count: check how many devices you expect to connect.
  • Features you need: confirm VPN, VLAN and portal options against the manual.
  • Security: confirm what the free AiProtection Pro subscription covers and for how long.
  • Placement: the manual explains the best position for coverage.
