The WORX WG801.9 is a compact cordless garden shear that works as two tools in one: a 4-inch grass shear and an 8-inch shrubber. It runs on WORX's 20V Power Share batteries and is sold as a tool only, so a battery and charger are not included.
Two blades, one tool
The grass shear blade is 4 inches wide and suits trimming lawn edges and small areas of grass. The 8-inch shrubbery blade is for bushes, shrubs and light hedge shaping. WORX says the blades are quick to change: flip the tool, press the button, slide off the faceplate and swap the blade. An optional pole extension is mentioned for reaching, which is sold separately.
Cutting performance
WORX lists a maximum cut capacity of 5/16 inch (about 8 mm) and a no-load speed of 1100 strokes per minute. The blades are described as dual-action, meaning both edges cut. A 5/16-inch capacity suits leaves, soft growth and thin twigs, not thick branches. For heavier pruning a full-size hedge trimmer, loppers or a saw is typically the better choice.
Power Share batteries
The "Tool Only" in the title is important: this model does not include a battery. WORX says the same 20V battery works with over 75 tools in the Power Share family across 20V, 40V and 80V lines. This helps if you already own a compatible battery and charger, since you only need the tool. If you do not, you will need to add them.
Weight and handling
The tool measures about 11 x 3.7 x 5.7 inches and weighs 1.3 lb without a battery (WORX describes it as about 2 lb overall). A rubber overmould handle is meant to absorb vibration and reduce hand fatigue. A sheath guard protects the blade in storage and, WORX says, extends its life.
Who it suits
WORX positions it for quick touch-ups between regular maintenance, such as a corner shrub or the grass around a tree, without taking out a larger hedge trimmer. WORX also says it could serve as a main trimmer if you prefer. It suits small gardens and owners already using the Power Share system.
What to check before you buy
- Battery: confirm you own a compatible 20V Power Share battery and charger.
- Branch thickness: check that your typical growth stays under the 5/16-inch capacity.
- Reach: consider whether you need the pole extension for tall or low work.
- Blade care: keep the sheath on in storage and clean the blades after use, as the manual advises.
- Safety: wear eye protection and gloves, and remove the battery before changing blades.
