The WORX WG252 is a battery-powered hedge trimmer with a 20-inch blade on a telescopic pole. WORX says it reaches up to 12 feet, so tall hedges can be trimmed from the ground without a ladder. A 2.0 Ah battery and charger come in the box, so there's no cord to manage and no fuel to mix.

Reach without a ladder

Working on a ladder with a trimmer in your hands is awkward, and the pole is the main idea behind this model. The telescopic pole extends to give up to 12 feet of reach, according to WORX. Fully extended, the whole tool measures about 93 inches long, so it's a tool to handle with both hands and a bit of space around you. It weighs 7.6 lb (about 3.4 kg), and a shoulder strap is included to share the load.

The 10-position head

The head adjusts through 10 positions with a button press. In practice, that lets you angle the blade flat for the top of a hedge, tilt it for overhead growth, or turn it vertical for the side. Without an adjustable head, you'd have to twist your wrists or change your stance for each of those cuts.

Rotating rear handle

The rear handle rotates 180 degrees. WORX says this keeps trimming comfortable at different angles. Combined with the strap, it's intended to reduce strain during longer sessions. Take breaks as you would with any overhead work.

Laser-cut blade

The blade is laser cut, which WORX says gives clean, precise results. A clean cut typically matters more with hedges than it sounds, as ragged ends can make growth look untidy. A blade sheath is included for covering the blade when it's stored or carried.

PowerShare battery

The WG252 runs on the 20V WORX PowerShare platform. WORX says the same battery fits more than 140 other tools and lifestyle products in the range. If you already own WORX 20V tools, you may already have spare batteries; if not, the battery here can be reused later.

A 2.0 Ah battery is a modest size. In general, run time depends on how thick and dense the hedge is, and larger hedges may need a second battery.

Who it suits

It suits owners of medium to tall hedges who want to avoid ladders, and gardeners who prefer a quiet, cordless tool over a petrol or corded one. For small, low hedges, a shorter trimmer may be more convenient.

What to check before you buy

  • Hedge height and thickness: compare with the 12-foot reach and typical branch thickness the blade can handle, as stated in the manual.
  • Battery capacity: consider a second battery for large jobs.
  • Weight and handling: the pole makes the tool long, so think about holding it overhead.
  • Existing batteries: check whether your WORX 20V batteries are PowerShare compatible.
  • Safety gear: follow the manual on eye protection, gloves and keeping clear of overhead power lines.
  • Storage: you'll need room for a tool nearly 8 feet long when the pole is extended, or less when collapsed.
