The WORX WG779 is a battery-powered push mower with a 14-inch cutting deck, built for small lawns. It runs on two 20V batteries that work together as a 40V system, so there is no fuel, no oil and no pull cord. WORX rates it for yards up to about 1/8 acre, which is roughly 500 square metres.
How the two batteries add up to 40V
The mower ships with two 20V, 4.0Ah batteries and a dual charger that fills both at once. Both batteries sit in the mower together, and WORX describes the result as 40V of power. Starting is a two-step action: press the button, then pull the bail handle. Releasing the handle stops the blade, which is how most modern push mowers work.
The batteries are part of the WORX Power Share platform. The brand says the same batteries fit more than 140 tools, outdoor equipment and lifestyle products, so one set of batteries can serve a trimmer, a blower or a drill from the same range. Check that any other tool you have in mind is listed as Power Share compatible.
What IntelliCut does
IntelliCut is WORX's name for a sensor system that adjusts cutting speed to the grass. WORX says it speeds up in dense or tall grass for smoother cutting and slows down in lighter turf to save battery. In general, a mower that doesn't run flat out all the time stretches its runtime, though how long a charge lasts always depends on the lawn.
Cutting height, mulching and bagging
A single lever moves the deck through six positions between 1.5 and 3.5 inches (about 3.8 to 8.9 cm). One lever is simpler than the four-wheel adjusters on some older mowers. Cooler-season grass is usually kept a little longer, so having a range matters.
The mower works two ways. With the included mulch plug in place, clippings are cut finely and returned to the lawn. Without it, they go into the 0.85-bushel collection bag, and a full-bag indicator tells you when to empty it. Mulching saves emptying; bagging leaves a tidier finish and is usually preferred when the grass is long or wet.
Size, weight and storage
The WG779 weighs 29.1 lb (about 13.2 kg), which WORX describes as easy to push uphill. The 14-inch deck is narrow enough to get through gates and between beds, though a narrower deck means more passes on a larger lawn. The handle folds fully, and there is a carry handle, so it can be stored in a small shed or a corner of the garage. The dimensions given are 50.3 x 15.3 x 37.3 inches when assembled for use.
Noise and battery status
WORX lists the sound level at 87.8 dB and describes it as quieter than a gas mower. That is still loud enough that hearing protection is a sensible habit with any mower. An on-board indicator shows the charge level so you know when to recharge.
Who it suits
It suits owners of small, fairly flat yards, townhouse lawns and anyone who wants to leave petrol behind. It is less suited to large or rough properties, where the narrow deck and battery capacity would mean many passes and recharges.
What to check before you buy
- Lawn size: compare your lawn with the 1/8-acre figure, and think about how many passes a 14-inch deck needs.
- Terrain: slopes, thick weeds and wet grass all drain batteries faster.
- Batteries: if you already own Power Share batteries, confirm the voltage and capacity are compatible.
- Storage: measure the space for the folded mower and the charger.
- Upkeep: check the manual on blade care and replacement.
- What's in the box: mower, collection bag, mulch plug, two 4.0Ah batteries and a dual charger.
