The WORX WG184 is a cordless string trimmer with a 13-inch cutting path that converts into a wheeled edger. It runs on two 20V PowerShare batteries that together give 40V, and both batteries and a charger are included. It is meant for tidying lawn borders, fence lines and paths without petrol or a power cord.
Two 20V batteries, 40V of power
WORX says the trimmer uses two 20V MaxLithium PowerShare batteries for 40V in total, and that the pair doubles the runtime of a single battery. Charging time is given as 60 minutes, and no-load speed as 7,500 revolutions per minute. No-load speed is the head speed without cutting resistance, so it will drop in thick grass.
PowerShare is WORX's shared battery platform. The brand says the batteries work across its 20V and 40V tools, outdoor power equipment and lifestyle products, so one set of batteries can power several tools.
Trimmer and edger in one
A button and a rotation of the head switch the tool from trimming to edging. In edger mode the head sits in line with a wheel, which guides it along the edge of a lawn beside a path or driveway. The pivoting head also lets you trim on slopes and uneven ground.
Command Feed and trimmer line
String trimmers need more line as it wears down. With the Command Feed system, WORX says you press a button to feed out more line, rather than bumping the head on the ground or stopping to adjust it by hand. WORX also says the line is of the type used by professional lawn crews.
Variable speed throttle
A variable speed throttle lets you speed up in tougher grass and slow down when the job is easy. Running slower typically saves battery, which is useful on a large lawn.
Handle, weight and size
The D-grip handle is adjustable so you can choose a comfortable working position and make long, smooth sweeps. The listing gives the tool's weight as 6.5 lb (about 2.9 kg) and its length as about 65.8 inches (167 cm).
What's in the box
WORX lists the trimmer and edger, two 20V MaxLithium batteries, a 20V charger, a spool and a safety guard. As with any power tool, read the manual and wear eye protection and sturdy footwear when trimming.
Who it suits
It suits owners of small to medium yards who want a quiet-by-comparison, low-maintenance alternative to a petrol trimmer, and those who already own, or plan to buy, other WORX PowerShare tools. Very large properties with thick, overgrown vegetation may need more runtime than two 20V batteries provide.
What to check before you buy
- Yard size: consider how much trimming you do in one go, and how many batteries you may need.
- Compatibility: if you own WORX tools, check the battery and charger fit.
- Line: check the line diameter and spare spools you will need.
- Storage: with the shaft over 65 inches long, check where it will hang or lie.
- Weight and handle: make sure the adjustable handle suits your height.
- Charging time: an hour per battery charge means planning ahead for bigger jobs.
