The WORX Nitro WG173.9 is a cordless string trimmer that also works as a wheeled edger and a mini-mower. It runs on a 20V Power Share battery and uses a brushless motor with a 13-inch cutting path. It is sold as a bare tool, so the battery and charger are bought separately.

Brushless motor

WORX says the brushless motor runs 50% longer, is 25% more powerful and lasts ten times as long as standard brushed motors. Those are WORX's comparisons. In general, brushless motors waste less energy as heat and have no carbon brushes to wear out, so they tend to give more runtime from the same battery and need less upkeep.

Dual line and a 13-inch cut

The head uses a dual-line design with 0.065-inch line and a 13-inch (about 33 cm) cutting diameter. WORX says this gives three times the trimming area of its GT series and twice the efficiency. A wider swath generally means fewer passes along a fence line or lawn edge.

Three tools in one

  • Trimmer: for general grass along fences, beds and walls.
  • Wheeled edger: for crisp lines along sidewalks, driveways and retaining walls; the wheels guide the cut.
  • Mini-mower: for quicker coverage over small patches of grass.

You switch between modes without separate tools, which helps in small yards with limited storage.

Command Feed line advancement

Instead of tapping the head on the ground, as with bump-feed systems, you push a button to advance the line. WORX says this patented Command Feed system gives you control over how much line is used. When the spool runs out, the listing says to reload with the pre-wound WA0007 replacement spool, sold separately.

Batteries and Power Share

The trimmer is sold as tool only. It works with WORX Power Share 20V batteries (sold separately), which WORX says power more than 140 tools across its 20V, 40V and 80V ranges. With a Power Share PRO battery, WORX claims up to 30% more runtime than its previous GT series. If you already own compatible batteries and a charger, you only need the tool.

Comfort and control

At 6.6 lb (about 3 kg) with a battery, the trimmer is light for its class. The head pivots 90°, the auxiliary handle adjusts and the shaft is telescopic, so you can fit it to your height and reach awkward spots or slopes. It measures 40.8 inches long. Wear eye protection and follow the manual's guidance on protective gear.

Who it suits

It suits owners of small to medium yards who want to avoid fuel and cords, and households that already have WORX 20V batteries. It's less suited to large properties with thick, tall growth, where a higher-voltage tool may be a better match.

What to check before you buy

  • Battery and charger: these aren't included, so confirm you have compatible Power Share batteries.
  • Runtime: think about your yard size and whether a spare battery is useful.
  • Spare line: check the WA0007 spool and how to load it.
  • Height: confirm the telescopic shaft suits you.
  • Storage: a 40.8-inch tool needs a wall hook or shelf space.
  • Safety: read the manual before first use.
