The WORX WG163E.2 is a cordless string trimmer that also converts into a wheeled lawn edger. It runs on a 20V lithium battery that is part of the WORX Power Share range. The aim is to trim grass along fences and beds and to cut a neat edge along paths without a cord or petrol engine.

Two tools in one

In trimmer mode, a spinning line cuts grass in places a mower can't reach. WORX says the unit transforms into an in-line edger in seconds, and the rubber wheels support and guide the cut for straighter lines. The cutting head turns so the line works vertically along a lawn edge, which is how edgers trim a clean border.

Command Feed line

WORX says its Command Feed push-button system feeds out line instantly, with no bumping on the ground. The line is 0.065 inch (1.65 mm) in diameter, and WORX gives a line length of 10 feet (3 m). A cutting diameter of 12 inches (30 cm) sets how wide a path the line clears on each pass. WORX also says a retractable distance protects flowers, plants and garden furniture.

Motor and battery

The no-load speed is 7,600 rpm. WORX says its 20V lithium batteries provide power and performance similar to a 40V petrol machine. The listing refers to two batteries in places, while the title mentions one 2.0Ah 20V battery, so check the box contents before ordering. Runtime depends on the grass and how you cut it.

The battery is part of WORX Power Share: it fits other 20V WORX tools, and WORX sells bare tools without batteries and chargers for people who already own them.

Adjustable head and shaft

The head pivots to different angles for hard-to-reach spots, and the telescopic shaft adjusts to the user's height. WORX says the handle rotates 90° for comfort and control.

Size and weight

The trimmer is 37.2 inches long (about 94 cm) and weighs 5.3 lb (about 2.4 kg). A light weight generally makes it easier to use for long sessions and for working along edges.

Who it suits

It suits owners of small to medium lawns who want a light, cord-free trimmer and edger in one, and people who already have WORX 20V batteries.

What to check before you buy

  • Battery: confirm the battery and charger included, and the runtime for your lawn.
  • Compatibility: if you own WORX 20V batteries, check the tool is Power Share compatible with them.
  • Lawn size: a 12-inch cutting width and a 2.0Ah battery suit lighter jobs.
  • Line: check how replacement line is fitted and which size to buy.
  • Safety: wear eye protection and sturdy footwear, and follow the manual.
  • Storage: the shaft is long, so allow room.
