The VEVOR RA342 is a large, walk-in metal chicken run with a fabric cover. It gives backyard poultry a roomy, enclosed outdoor space, and is tall enough for a person to step inside to feed, clean and collect eggs. VEVOR also suggests it for ducks, rabbits, geese, quail and other small animals.

Size and layout

The listing gives the enclosure as 9.8 x 13.1 x 6.5 feet (roughly 3 x 4 x 2 metres), with ventilation on all four sides. Poultry guidance usually recommends several square feet per bird in the run, and more in the coop, so use that guidance and your local rules to work out how many birds suit this size. At about 128 square feet, there is room to spare for a small flock.

Note that the listing's shipping dimensions differ from the assembled size, because the package comes flat in pieces, at 73 lb.

Frame and mesh

The frame uses 1-inch galvanized steel pipes with precise welding. Galvanizing coats steel in zinc to slow rust, which matters for something left outside in all weathers. The sides are covered with hexagonal wire mesh, the style often called chicken wire, which keeps birds in and lets in air and light.

Hexagonal mesh mainly contains birds and deters larger animals from walking in. It isn't as strong as welded mesh, so if predators are a concern where you live, ask local poultry keepers what extra protection is needed. VEVOR itself recommends reinforcing the bottom against wildlife such as raccoons with galvanized wire fencing, wood or stones laid tight along the base.

Cover

A PE-coated tarp covers the roof. VEVOR describes it as sun-protective, waterproof and tear-resistant. The roof has a spire (peaked) shape designed so that water, debris and light snow slide off. Tarps do wear over time, so keep an eye on tension and condition, and check what snow load the manual allows in your climate.

Lock and access

The door has a security lock. A simple lock helps keep curious animals and people out, though it won't deter a determined predator on its own.

Assembly

Parts are labelled and a manual is included. VEVOR says two people are needed for installation and for extending it. Choose a flat spot, and anchor the frame as the manual describes, since a big covered structure can catch the wind.

Who it suits

It suits backyard keepers who want a separate, roomy run, whether attached to an existing coop or used alongside a shelter, and small farms or hobbyists who keep ducks or rabbits too.

What to check before you buy

  • Flock size: check the space you need per bird in your area.
  • Shelter: this is a run, so plan a separate coop or nesting boxes for sleeping and laying unless you add them.
  • Predators: think about digging and climbing animals, and reinforce the base and mesh as needed.
  • Site: pick level, well-drained ground with room around it.
  • Local rules: zoning and homeowners' associations may limit backyard poultry and structures.
  • Weather: consider wind and snow load, and how often you might replace the tarp.
