The VEVOR NW-S20 is a wall-mounted retractable garden hose reel with 65 feet of hose. The spring-driven reel pulls the hose back into a case when you are done, so it stays off the ground, tidy and out of the way of the lawn mower and the garage floor.

Reach and coverage

The reel holds a 65 ft (about 20 m) hose of 1/2 inch diameter, plus a 6 ft lead hose that connects it to the tap. VEVOR says that this covers up to 4,306 square feet (400 m²), though actual reach depends on where you mount the reel, how far the hose has to run around obstacles and the angle of your garden.

Any-length lock and slow rewind

You pull the hose out to the length you need and a ratchet locking system holds it there, so you aren't forced to pull out the whole hose to water a nearby bed. A tug releases it for rewinding.

Retractable reels can snap back fast, so VEVOR has added a slow rewind system. It says the hose takes 10 to 11.5 seconds to return, for up to 98 feet of hose, and that the steel spring supports over 20,000 retractions. Even with a slow return, guide the hose back by hand and keep fingers and faces clear of the reel.

Hose and shell

The hose has three PVC layers and a 3/4-inch brass connector. VEVOR says it passed pressure testing at 200 psi or more and has a burst pressure of 600 psi, both well above typical household supply pressure. The reel's shell is frost-resistant polypropylene (PP), which VEVOR says tolerates high and low temperatures. As with any garden hose, drain it and bring it in or protect it in freezing weather as the manual advises.

Swivel bracket

The mounting bracket swivels 180°, so you can pull the hose out to the left, right or straight ahead without it dragging against the wall corner. The reel is compact, about 16.1 x 7.9 x 14.0 inches and 16.8 lb, which suits a garage wall, shed or fence. Mounting needs a solid surface that can take the weight of the reel and a full hose of water, so use suitable fixings.

The nozzle

The included nozzle has nine spray patterns. VEVOR suggests uses such as watering plants, washing a car, bathing pets and cleaning a driveway. A nozzle like this typically has patterns from a gentle shower for seedlings to a firmer jet for hard surfaces.

Who it suits

It suits homeowners with a medium to large yard who are tired of coiling, tangling and storing a loose hose, and anyone who wants a fixed watering point by a patio, garage or garden wall.

What to check before you buy

  • Mounting spot: pick a wall or post that is solid, near your tap, and with a clear path for the hose.
  • Distance: measure the run from the reel to the farthest area you water, including corners.
  • Tap connection: confirm your outdoor tap fits the lead hose connector, or that an adapter is available.
  • Hose width: a 1/2 inch hose delivers less volume than wider ones, which matters for large sprinklers.
  • Winter care: read the manual on draining and storing it in freezing weather.
