The VEVOR KS009-SIS is a foldable seat with a high back, made to replace or upgrade the seat in a kayak or canoe. It is aimed at sit-on-top kayaks, fishing kayaks, inflatable kayaks and canoes, where a basic seat can leave you sitting low and unsupported. It attaches with straps, so no drilling or modification is needed.

Seat design

The seat has a 1.3 inch (about 3.3 cm) cushion and a high back, which VEVOR says gives comfortable, stable support for long paddling sessions, cruising or fishing. The back rest is adjustable, so you can set the angle that suits how you paddle. The listing also describes a raised height of 1.3 inches, which lifts you a little off the hull.

A higher, supported seating position can make long trips more comfortable and can help with posture while paddling, but personal fit varies a lot. Try different settings on short trips first.

Frame and fabric

The frame is reinforced aluminium alloy, which is light and does not rust like steel. The fabric is what VEVOR calls breathable Stirling fabric, which it says is splash and wear resistant for varied outdoor conditions. Even so, rinse the seat after use in salt water and let it dry before storing.

Folding and storage

The frame folds down compactly, which makes the seat easier to carry in a car, a boat cabin or a gear bag, and easier to put away out of season. It measures 22.8 x 20.7 x 17.5 inches (about 58 x 53 x 44 cm) in the listing and weighs 5.2 lb (about 2.4 kg).

Straps and mounting

Two lengths of PP strap come with the seat, and the mounting points are adjustable so it can fit different boat layouts. VEVOR says it fits most sit-on-top kayaks, canoes and inflatable kayaks without modification. Strap placement depends on the anchor points on your boat, such as D-rings, so fit can vary.

Who it suits

It suits paddlers who feel their kayak seat is too low, too flat or too basic, and anglers who sit for long periods. It also suits owners of inflatable kayaks who want something that folds. People with a sit-in kayak with a moulded cockpit should check the seat width and the space available.

What to check before you buy

  • Anchor points: check that your boat has D-rings or attachment points where the straps can reach.
  • Space: measure the seating area against the seat's 22.8 x 20.7 inch footprint.
  • Height and balance: a raised seat shifts your centre of gravity; try it in calm water first.
  • Comfort: a cushion of 1.3 inches suits some people and not others.
  • Care: rinse after use and dry before folding.
  • Weight limit: the listing does not state one, so check the manual.
