The VEVOR HCP370A-L combines a water pump and a sand filter in one unit for above ground pools. The pump circulates the pool water through a tank of sand, which traps fine particles, and a six-way valve switches between filtering, cleaning and winter modes. This page explains what the specs mean and what to check against your pool.
How a sand filter works
Water is pushed through a bed of sand, and debris is caught between the grains. Over time the trapped dirt slows the flow, so the filter needs backwashing: running water backward through the sand to flush the dirt out. Sand filters generally need less frequent attention than cartridge types, but the sand does eventually need replacing.
VEVOR says this unit is compatible with 0.5-0.8 mm sand or sand filter balls, both sold separately. The tank is 12 inches across, and VEVOR says it filters out fine particles, hair and leaves.
Pump power and flow
The pump is 1/2 HP and rated at 3,000 GPH (gallons per hour). A common rule of thumb is that a pool's whole volume should pass through the filter once or twice a day, so a higher flow suits larger pools. To compare it with your pool, divide your pool's volume in gallons by the GPH figure to get the hours needed for a full turnover, and then check the manual for the recommended pool size.
A strainer basket in front of the pump catches leaves and larger debris. The basket can be taken apart and put back together, and a transparent cover lets you see when it needs emptying.
The six-way valve
The multi-port valve has six positions, listed by VEVOR as:
- Filter: normal operation.
- Rinse: a short flush after backwashing.
- Backwash: reverses the flow to clean the sand.
- Waste: sends water out without passing through the sand, for example to lower the water level.
- Winter: for off-season storage.
- Closed: shuts off flow.
Always switch the pump off before moving the valve, as filter manuals typically advise.
Leaks and fittings
VEVOR describes a threaded multi-port valve and threaded connections to reduce leaks. An Intex connector is included for use with Intex pools. For other pool brands, check the hose diameter and fittings the pump needs. VEVOR says the system can be used for backyard pools, community pools and small water parks, though you should check the flow rate against the pool size.
Size
The unit measures about 17.3 x 16.1 x 22.8 inches (roughly 44 x 41 x 58 cm), so allow a flat, level space near the pool with room to reach the valve and basket.
Who it suits
It suits owners of above ground pools who want a sand filter in place of a cartridge system, or who need a replacement for an older pump. It is more of a regular maintenance item than a one-off purchase, so it suits people who are comfortable with backwashing.
What to check before you buy
- Pool volume: compare your pool's volume with the 3,000 GPH flow and the manufacturer's size guidance.
- Hose size: check the hose connection diameter of your pool against the pump's.
- Sand: the sand is sold separately; check how much it takes and the grade (0.5-0.8 mm).
- Electrical: pool equipment usually needs a properly protected outlet, so follow local codes and the manual.
- Placement: put the unit on firm, level ground with drainage for backwash water.
- Season: plan for winter storage using the winter setting as described in the manual.
