The DEWENWILS PTZA02 is a heavy-duty timer and switch box that uses Z-Wave 800 Series long-range wireless. It is built to switch high-power equipment such as pool pumps, heaters, filters, spas, irrigation systems and landscape lighting, either by hand or through a Z-Wave controller. It is a device for people who already run a smart-home system.
A device for advanced users
The listing opens with a clear warning: this is for advanced users, not beginners. DEWENWILS says you need to be comfortable with programming and have solid computer and Z-Wave knowledge. That fits how Z-Wave works. The timer does not come with a stand-alone app. It joins a Z-Wave network built around a hub or controller, and schedules are set in that controller.
What Z-Wave and "long range" mean
Z-Wave is a low-power wireless protocol used for smart-home devices. It typically works on its own radio frequency, rather than sharing the busy Wi-Fi band. DEWENWILS says it gives stronger privacy, longer range and more stable connections. The 800 Series refers to the newer generation of Z-Wave chips, and "Long Range" is a Z-Wave feature that extends how far a device can sit from its controller. Whether you can use the long-range feature depends on your hub, so check its specifications.
For a pump house or a pool pad at the far end of a garden, that range is the point: you can control equipment without walking out in bad weather.
Power capacity
The box supports 40A and 3HP at 240VAC. That is the kind of load that pool pumps and similar equipment draw, and well above what an ordinary plug-in smart switch handles. Controlling a circuit like that normally involves hard wiring, so have the installation done in line with local electrical codes, by a licensed electrician where the rules require it.
Enclosure and conditions
DEWENWILS lists a corrosion-resistant metal housing, an IP44 protection class and a flame-retardant PC core, for outdoor use from -40°F to 140°F. IP44 generally means protection against splashing water from any direction. The enclosure is lockable and tamper-resistant, and the listing says it is ETL certified. At 9.4 x 4.2 x 7.8 inches, it needs a wall spot with space for conduit and wiring.
Control options
It can be operated manually, with ON, OFF and Mode options, or remotely by Z-Wave. This means you can still switch the equipment at the box if the network is down.
Who it suits
It suits owners of pools, spas or irrigation systems who already use a Z-Wave hub and want scheduled control of heavy loads. It is not aimed at someone who wants a first smart plug.
What to check before you buy
- Your hub: confirm it supports Z-Wave 800 Series devices and whether it supports Long Range.
- Your load: check your equipment's voltage, amperage and horsepower against 40A, 3HP and 240VAC.
- Wiring: have it installed to local codes, and follow the manual.
- Location: check the IP44 class and temperature range suit the site.
- Skills: the brand says it is for advanced users only.
