The SENIX LSPG-L3 is a 20-inch push lawn mower powered by a 125 cc Briggs & Stratton four-cycle engine. It is aimed at small to medium yards and folds down for storage. Here is what the specs mean and what to think about before choosing a push gas mower.

The engine and starting

The mower uses a Briggs & Stratton 125 cc E300 four-cycle engine with a "Prime n Pull" start. A four-cycle engine runs on plain petrol with oil in a separate crankcase, so there's no fuel-and-oil mixing as with two-stroke tools. Prime n Pull refers to pressing a primer bulb before pulling the starter cord. SENIX says the engine is designed for longer life, low vibration and easy maintenance. As with any petrol engine, expect to check oil and fuel and change the oil and air filter on a regular schedule, as the manual sets out.

A 20-inch deck for small to medium lawns

The steel deck gives a 20-inch cutting width. A wider deck means fewer passes, but a bigger mower is harder to turn in tight spaces. Twenty inches is a common size for suburban lawns. SENIX says the deck uses a "vortex tunnel" design and a side discharge chute to spread clippings evenly across the lawn. Side discharge throws clippings out to the side, which is fine for regular mowing but is less tidy than bagging when the grass is long.

Cutting height and wheels

A single-lever, five-position adjustment sets the cutting height from 1.25 to 3.75 inches (about 3 to 9.5 cm). A common rule of thumb is to cut no more than about a third of the blade length at a time, and to leave the grass a little longer in hot, dry weather. The wheels are 7 inches across, which SENIX says gives easy handling in tight spaces. Smaller wheels turn easily on flat ground but are harder to push over bumpy or soft lawns than larger ones.

Folding handle and storage

The handle folds down so the mower takes less room in a shed or garage. The listing gives the dimensions as 26.5 x 21.7 x 14.0 inches and the weight as 49 lb (about 22 kg), light enough to lift into a car boot. Before folding or tipping the mower, follow the manual on fuel and oil position to avoid leaks.

What's in the box

SENIX says the mower comes with engine oil, so you can fill the crankcase before the first start. A two-year limited warranty is listed.

Who it suits

It suits owners of small to medium lawns who want a straightforward, non-powered-drive mower that folds away. Because it is a push model, you supply the forward motion, which matters on slopes or larger lawns.

What to check before you buy

  • Lawn size and slope: a push mower is simplest on flat or gently sloping ground.
  • Clippings: this model is described with side discharge only, so confirm that suits how you manage your lawn.
  • Fuel and oil: have fresh petrol and know the oil type the manual calls for.
  • Storage: measure your shed or garage against the folded size.
  • Local rules: check any local limits on petrol equipment and operating hours.
  • Upkeep: plan for blade sharpening, air filter and oil changes.
