The Schneider Electric OffGrid PPS500 is a portable power station: a rechargeable lithium-ion battery in a carry-friendly case, with outlets for phones, laptops, lights and small appliances. Schneider Electric sells it for camping, for home backup of small devices and for keeping electronics running when the mains is out. It sits in the middle of a three-model range, between the 300W PPS330 and the 700W PPS730.
Capacity: what 516Wh means
Battery capacity is measured in watt-hours. The PPS500 holds about 516Wh (the title says 517Wh). As a rough guide, a device that draws 50 watts could run for around ten hours on that energy, though conversion losses mean real runtime is a bit shorter. A phone battery is typically 10 to 20Wh, so the station can recharge a phone many times over. The unit weighs 12.1 lb (about 5.5 kg) and measures roughly 9.8 x 7.9 x 8.0 inches (25 x 20 x 20 cm).
Outputs
Schneider says you can charge up to 12 devices at once. The ports are:
- 3 AC outlets rated at 500W, delivering pure sine wave power. Pure sine wave typically suits sensitive electronics better than modified waveforms.
- 3 USB-A ports.
- 2 USB-C ports, with Quick Charge 18W and PD 60W.
- 1 DC car port.
- 1 wireless charging pad.
The 500W figure is a limit on what you can plug into the AC outlets, so check the wattage of anything you plan to run, and remember that some appliances draw extra power at start-up.
Three ways to recharge
You can charge from a wall outlet, a car, or a solar panel; the panel is sold separately. Schneider names the 100W PSP100 and 200W PSP200 panels as options. It also says you can charge via AC and DC at the same time for faster replenishment. Solar charging time depends on sunlight and panel size, so expect variation.
Battery protection
The battery is built with LG cells, and Schneider says it is engineered to retain over 80% capacity after 1,000 charge cycles. The brand says it protects against overheating, overcharging and short circuits. Follow the supplied safety guide for use and storage.
Light and extras
An ambient LED light has a flashing SOS mode, which Schneider says helps visibility and preparedness. The company also says the unit is made with 50% recycled materials.
What's in the box
The listing names the power station, an AC charging cable, a DC charging cable, a safety guide, a quick start guide and a 2-year warranty.
Who it suits
It is aimed at campers, van and cabin users, and households who want a quiet, fume-free source of backup power for small devices. Unlike a fuel generator, a battery unit has no exhaust, so it can typically be used in more places, but it holds a limited amount of energy.
What to check before you buy
- Add up the watts of the devices you want to run and compare with the 500W limit.
- Estimate runtime from the device's wattage against the 516Wh capacity.
- Whether you need a solar panel and the matching cable.
- Charging speed from your chosen source.
- Weight and size for your trips, and somewhere to keep it.
- Do not use it for life-support equipment, and follow the manual.
