The monTEK VA1003BK is a freestanding vertical bike rack that holds up to five bicycles on one steel frame. It stands on its own, so there's no need to drill into a wall, and it rolls on casters when you need to move it. It suits garages, sheds and hallways where bikes are taking up floor space.
How vertical storage saves space
Instead of leaning bikes against a wall or laying them flat, a vertical rack hangs each bike by a wheel from a hook. monTEK says this frees up 80% of the floor space, which is the brand's own figure. In general, hanging bikes side by side takes much less room than parking them on the floor, as long as you can lift each bike onto its hook.
The rack measures about 45.8 × 35.8 × 79.9 inches (roughly 116 × 91 × 203 cm) and weighs 33.8 lb. The frame is matte-black powder-coated steel, which monTEK says resists scratches and rust.
Hooks and capacity
There are five sliding PVC-coated hooks, each rated at 55 lb, plus six height-adjustable accessory hooks for helmets, bags and other gear. The PVC coating is there to protect the rim and tyre from scratches. The hooks slide sideways so you can space the bikes to keep handlebars from clashing, which is a common issue on a crowded rack.
The total capacity is listed at 350 lb, and monTEK says this exceeds ASTM safety standards. As with any rack, keep each bike within its hook's limit and spread heavy bikes along the frame.
Casters and stability
The rack has four large locking casters with 360° swivel. Rolling it lets you clear a garage floor or pull it out to reach a bike, then brake the wheels to keep it still. A reinforced triangular base is meant to keep it stable, and the locks help on uneven floors.
Rolling a fully loaded rack is something to do slowly, and the floor matters: smooth concrete is easier than a rough or sloped surface.
Adjustments and bike fit
The frame height adjusts from 49 to 78.5 inches, and a height-adjustable protection crossbar guards the bikes and the wall from scratches. monTEK lists the fit as tyres up to 3.5 inches wide and 3.1 inches tall, covering e-bikes, road bikes and kids' bikes. Very wide tyres, like those on some fat bikes, may not fit, and e-bikes are heavy to lift, so think about whether you can hang yours.
Setting it up
All the necessary accessories and installation instructions are in the box, and the frame has pre-drilled holes. monTEK advises checking that all screws are tight before you hang a bike. A bike hung from a wheel hook is lifted by the front wheel, so this is easier with lighter bikes.
Who it suits
It suits households with several bikes, a garage with limited floor space, or anyone who wants to keep bikes up off the floor without wall fixings, such as renters. It also helps when you want to move the whole rack, for example to park a car.
What to check before you buy
- Ceiling and floor space: the rack is about 80 inches tall at its maximum, so check your ceiling height and the footprint.
- Tyre size: confirm your tyres fit within 3.5 inches wide and 3.1 inches tall.
- Bike weight: compare each bike with the 55 lb hook limit, especially e-bikes.
- Lifting: think about whether everyone using the rack can lift a bike onto a hook.
- Floor: locking casters work best on a flat, hard surface.
- Assembly: check that every screw is firm after assembly and from time to time afterward.
