The isinwheel GT2 is a foldable adult electric scooter with large off-road tyres, front and rear suspension and a brushless motor. It is meant for commuting and for rougher surfaces than a typical small scooter handles. Here is what the figures mean and what to check, including local rules.

Motor, speed and hills

isinwheel says the GT2 has a brushless motor rated at 800W, with a top speed of 28 mph (about 45 km/h) and a maximum climbing slope of 35%. Brushless motors typically need less maintenance than brushed ones and run efficiently. Hill figures are usually measured on ideal conditions with a lighter rider, so heavier loads and long climbs typically slow a scooter down.

Three speed modes let you limit the pace:

  • First gear: 0-10 mph.
  • Second gear: 0-18 mph.
  • Third gear: 0-28 mph.

Battery and range

The scooter uses a 48V/15Ah lithium-ion battery. Multiply volts by amp-hours and you get about 720 Wh, a rough measure of the energy it holds. isinwheel quotes up to 28 miles (about 45 km) in standard mode. Range depends on rider weight, speed, terrain, temperature and tyre pressure, so real distances are usually shorter than the maximum when you ride fast or uphill.

Tyres and suspension

The GT2 has 11-inch pneumatic (air-filled) off-road tyres. Larger air tyres typically cope better with potholes, gravel and kerbs than small solid ones, and they add cushioning. Front and rear independent suspension, which isinwheel describes as four shock absorbers, takes up more of the impact. The maximum load is listed as 330 lb (about 150 kg). Pneumatic tyres need occasional pressure checks and can puncture.

Brakes, lights and display

The scooter has a hydraulic brake system. isinwheel lists a 360-degree lighting set made up of dual headlights, dual side lights, a rear turn signal and a brake light. An LCD meter shows speed, speed mode and battery level. Lights help you be seen, but they don't replace a helmet and common sense.

Folding and size

The GT2 folds so it can be kept in a car boot or carried onto public transport where allowed. Its listed dimensions are about 48 x 24.8 x 49 inches (122 x 63 x 124 cm) as packaged or unfolded, and it weighs 50 lb (about 22.7 kg). That is heavy to carry up stairs, so think about where you'll keep it.

Warranty

isinwheel says it offers a 365-day or 180-day warranty depending on the part. Read the warranty terms before relying on them.

What to check before you buy

  • Local rules: laws on electric scooters, speed limits, age limits and where you may ride differ by place. Check them before you ride, and wear a helmet.
  • Weight: 50 lb is a lot to lift, so consider stairs and where it will live.
  • Your route: compare the real distance and hills of your commute with the rated range.
  • Charging: note where you can charge a large battery and follow the manual's charging advice.
  • Upkeep: plan for tyre pressure checks, brake care and tightening bolts as the manual describes.
