The iScooter IK3 is an electric scooter sized for children aged 6 to 12. It has a 150W motor, three speed modes and a dual braking system, and is aimed at families who want a first electric scooter with a gentle top speed.

Motor and speed modes

The motor is rated at 150W. A rider selects among three modes, marked E, N and S, with top speeds of 3, 6 and 10 mph (about 5, 10 and 16 km/h). The lowest mode suits a new rider learning to balance, and the higher modes suit a child with more experience. Parents can choose the mode that fits their child's skill and the place they will ride.

iScooter says the scooter has to be pushed along to build some speed before the motor engages. The design aims to prevent sudden starts if the throttle is touched by accident.

Brakes and lighting

There are two ways to stop. An electronic brake works on the throttle side, and a foot brake sits over the rear wheel. Having both gives a rider options, and it is a common arrangement on children's scooters. iScooter also adds coloured ambient lights, which it says add to the fun and make the scooter more visible.

LED display

A simple LED display shows speed and battery level, so a child (and a parent standing nearby) can see how much charge is left before heading back.

Magnetic charging and run time

The charging port is magnetic, so the plug snaps into place without needing to be lined up precisely. iScooter says one charge lasts for 60 to 80 minutes of riding, and notes that this varies with load, temperature, wind, road conditions and riding habits. The brand advises fully charging the scooter before the first ride.

Size, weight and rider limits

The scooter is 32.3 inches long, 14.4 inches wide and 38.8 inches tall (about 82 x 37 x 99 cm) and weighs 17.6 lb (about 8 kg), light enough for most adults to lift into a car boot. The maximum rider weight is 154 lb (about 70 kg), and the frame height is set for ages 6 to 12. A child at the edge of that range may outgrow it sooner.

Who it suits

It suits families who want a lightweight, low-speed electric scooter for a child to ride on smooth, quiet paths. As with any wheeled toy, children should wear a helmet and other protective gear, and adults should supervise. Rules on where electric scooters may be ridden differ between places, so check your local regulations.

What to check before you buy

  • Age and size: compare your child's height and weight with the listed range.
  • Local rules: check whether a child can ride one on your streets, paths or in parks.
  • Terrain: small wheels suit smooth surfaces better than rough ground.
  • Charging: plan for charging time before outings, and follow the manual's guidance on batteries.
  • Storage and lifting: about 17.6 lb is manageable, but check the folding and carrying details.
  • Parts and service: iScooter lists support periods that differ by part; read the details.
