The iScooter i12 is a folding electric scooter for adults with a seat, a rear basket and 12-inch pneumatic tyres. It is aimed at short commutes, campus travel and errands, for riders who would rather sit than stand. iScooter rates it for a top speed of 15.6 mph (about 25 km/h) and a range of up to 21 miles (about 34 km).

Motor, speed and climbing

The scooter has a 500W motor. In general, motor power affects how quickly it accelerates and how well it holds speed on slopes. iScooter says it handles inclines of up to 15 percent, which is a steep hill by everyday standards. Heavier riders and longer climbs reduce speed and range. The maximum rider weight is listed as 264 lb (about 120 kg).

Battery and range

The battery is 36V and 7.5Ah. iScooter quotes up to 21 miles of range, which is a maximum under favourable conditions. Rider weight, speed, hills, temperature, tyre pressure and stop-start riding all reduce it in real use, so plan on less for a regular commute and keep a margin.

Seat, handlebar and comfort

The seat and handlebar are both height adjustable, so riders of different heights can find a comfortable position. The footboard is wide enough to rest both feet. Front and rear dual suspension and 12-inch pneumatic (air-filled) tyres help with bumps and cracks. Larger pneumatic tyres typically give a smoother ride than small solid ones, though they can be punctured and need correct pressure.

Brakes, lights and lock

The scooter has dual disc brakes, an ultra-bright headlight and a warning taillight. An electric lock stops the scooter being switched on without authorisation. iScooter states that it is certified to UL2272, the electrical safety standard for e-mobility devices that covers the battery and charging system. Certification relates to the electrical system, not to how safely it is ridden.

Folding, weight and carrying

The scooter weighs 55 lb (about 25 kg) and folds in one step so it fits in a car trunk. At that weight, lifting it up stairs or into a vehicle is a real task for many people, so think about where you will keep it. The unfolded size is about 45.6 x 9.0 x 22.8 inches. A detachable basket behind the seat holds light cargo.

Rules and riding safely

Rules for e-scooters differ widely by country, province, state and city: where they can be ridden, speed limits, age limits, and helmet requirements. Check your local rules before riding, wear a helmet, and follow the manual on assembly, charging and maintenance.

Warranty

iScooter lists a 12-month warranty, or 180 days on some parts. Read the terms to see what each covers.

Who it suits

It suits adults with a short, fairly smooth commute, students on a campus, and anyone who prefers to ride seated. It is less suited to long trips or to people who must carry the scooter often.

What to check before you buy

  • Weight: 55 lb is heavy to carry; check your stairs, storage and vehicle.
  • Range: compare your daily distance with the rated range, allowing a margin.
  • Rider size: check the maximum load and the seat and handlebar height range.
  • Local rules: confirm where it can legally be ridden.
  • Charging: use the supplied charger, and charge as the manual directs.
