The Hyperice Vyper 3 is a foam roller with a built-in vibration motor. Like a standard foam roller, you lie or sit on it and roll your body over the surface as part of a warm-up or cool-down; the difference is that it vibrates at three selectable speeds. It is cordless and compact enough for a gym bag.

How the vibration works

The Vyper 3 has a high-torque 34W motor and three speeds. Three white LEDs show the speed selected. Hyperice describes the vibration as high-intensity and intended to energise muscles before activity. To turn it off, hold the power button. It is worth starting on the lowest speed and following the manual.

The roller itself

The roller is made of EPP (expanded polypropylene), a firm, lightweight foam that keeps its shape under body weight. Hyperice says the contoured design helps avoid pressure on the spine and other sensitive areas, so the surface has raised and recessed areas rather than being a plain cylinder. It measures about 8 x 8 x 19 inches and weighs about 3.1 lb.

Battery and charging

Hyperice lists a two-hour battery life and says the roller needs five hours of charge before first use. A green LED indicates battery level, and a single blinking blue LED shows it is on standby. The session timer is preset to 10 minutes, so the device switching off after 10 minutes is described as normal.

The Hyperice app

The roller can be paired to the Hyperice app from a phone. Hyperice says the app offers guided sessions and advice and lets you monitor progress. You do not need it to use the roller, but it may help if you want a routine to follow.

Travel

Hyperice calls the roller travel-friendly and TSA approved as a carry-on. Because it has a lithium battery, check your airline's current rules for batteries and carry-on items before you travel.

Who it suits

It suits people who already use foam rollers in warm-ups or cool-downs and want a vibration option, gym-goers, runners and others who exercise at home or travel. People with health conditions, injuries or pregnancy should ask a qualified professional before using any vibrating device.

What to check before you buy

  • Weight and size: a 19-inch length suits many exercises, but check it fits your storage and bag.
  • Surface firmness: EPP rollers are firm; consider whether that suits you.
  • Charging time: plan for the initial five-hour charge.
  • Session length: the 10-minute auto-off is built in.
  • Phone compatibility: check that your phone works with the app if you want to use it.
  • Instructions: read the manual on use and care.

The short version

  • Contoured EPP roller, about 3 lb.
  • Two-hour battery, five-hour first charge and a 10-minute auto shut-off.
  • Pairs with the Hyperice app.
  • Follow the manual, and check with a professional if you have any health concerns.
