The EDISHINE HGSL35B is a set of ten low-voltage bollard path lights in a matte black cylindrical design. They are meant to line walkways, driveways and garden beds with a soft downward light, and they connect to a low-voltage landscape lighting system rather than to household mains directly. Here is what the features mean and what you need to have on hand.

A low-voltage system, explained

Low-voltage landscape lighting runs on a transformer that steps household voltage down to a safer level, typically 12 volts. Lights are then connected along a length of low-voltage cable. EDISHINE states plainly that the transformer and wire are sold separately, so these lights are one part of a system you assemble.

Because the voltage is low, the cable can usually be run along the ground or shallowly buried without the depth requirements that apply to mains wiring. Local electrical codes and the manufacturer's manual still apply, so check them before you plan the layout.

Glass shade and light output

Each light has an optical glass shade. EDISHINE rates its light transmittance at 92% and says that gives about 30% more brightness than standard polycarbonate shades. The brand also says the glass resists UV and will not yellow for up to 10 years. Glass tends to stay clear where plastic can cloud over time, though it is also more breakable if struck by a mower or a boot.

A square shade sits over the LED and directs light downward. EDISHINE lists a beam range of 6.4 ft (about 2 m), which suits marking a path edge rather than flooding a lawn. The point of a bollard light is to show where to step, not to light a whole yard.

Build and weather protection

The body is heavy-duty die-cast aluminium. The lights are rated IP65, which in general means the housing is sealed against dust and protected from water jets. EDISHINE lists an operating range of -40°F to 140°F (-40°C to 60°C), so rain, snow and summer heat are covered on paper. Aluminium with a coated finish resists rust better than steel, but scratches in the finish are worth touching up over the years.

LED lifespan

EDISHINE says the built-in LEDs can last over 17 years at eight hours of use a day. Lifespan figures like this are calculated figures that assume steady conditions, so treat them as a guide. The practical point is that built-in LEDs usually mean no bulbs to replace, but also that if the light fails, the whole unit may need replacing.

Installation

Setup needs no tools. Each light comes with a quick-lock connector and a ground stake, and the lights connect to the transformer or to the low-voltage wire. You push the stake into the soil where you want the light. The brand lists four connectors and four stakes in the set, so confirm what is in the box for all ten lights before you plan your layout. A 15-inch extension cord on each light gives some flexibility in placement and means fewer connections along the run.

Who they suit

They suit homeowners who already have, or are planning, a low-voltage lighting circuit and want a modern, minimal look along paths and borders. By day the cylinders read as small garden sculptures, and at night they give a soft glow. They are less suited to anyone wanting plug-in or solar lights with no transformer.

What to check before you buy

  • Transformer: you need a compatible low-voltage transformer with enough capacity for ten lights; check each light's wattage in the manual.
  • Cable: the wire is sold separately, so measure your run and the gauge needed.
  • Spacing: with a 6.4 ft beam range, plan spacing along the path before buying more.
  • Mower and foot traffic: glass shades are best kept clear of mowing lines.
  • Local rules: follow local electrical codes and the manual for cable placement and connections.
  • What's in the box: confirm the number of connectors and stakes.
