The VEVOR SL-08 is a countertop slicing machine for fruit, vegetables and cheese. It does the repetitive work of cutting even slices, which matters in a busy kitchen where a knife or hand mandoline would be slow and inconsistent. VEVOR also designs it to switch to hand-cranked operation when there's no power.

Adjustable slice thickness

Thickness is set with a large knob at the centre of the blade disc, and VEVOR says it covers 0 to 0.5 inches (0 to 12 mm). That spans paper-thin slices for salads to thicker cuts for cheese. The setting is made by turning the knob, so you can change it between batches without tools.

Two modes: electric and manual

In electric mode, you pull the spring lever back, place the food in the chute and press the switch. The spring then pushes the food towards the blade, so your hands stay clear. VEVOR says a soft spring helps stop soft items such as tomatoes, kiwis and cheese from being flattened.

For manual use, VEVOR says you remove the protective casing and install the supplied handle. That makes it usable at a picnic or anywhere without an outlet.

Blades and body

The two blades are made from 420J2 stainless steel, a common grade for kitchen cutting tools. VEVOR says they release with a snap, which makes changing them easy. The body is stainless steel as well, and VEVOR says you can rinse the whole machine under the tap. As with any slicer, it is sensible to follow the manual on cleaning around the blade and to keep fingers well away from the cutting disc.

Feed chute and stability

The food chute measures 8.7 x 5.1 x 6.3 inches, which VEVOR says accommodates potatoes, lemons, cabbages, carrots and cheese, whether soft or hard. Six suction cups hold the machine in place on a smooth surface. Suction cups work best on clean, flat, non-porous counters, so a textured or dusty worktop may reduce their grip.

Size and weight

The machine measures about 17.3 x 14.6 x 19.1 inches (44 x 37 x 49 cm) and weighs 18.6 lb (about 8.4 kg). It's a sizeable unit that needs a permanent spot or a clear area at the counter's edge when in use.

Who it suits

VEVOR lists it for restaurants, cafeterias, hotels, fruit stands and beverage outlets, and also mentions home use. It fits anyone preparing large amounts of sliced produce, such as for salads, garnishes, frying or drying. VEVOR also notes it can be used alongside a food dehydrator to prepare slices for drying.

What to check before you buy

  • Counter space: the footprint and 19-inch height need room, including under wall cabinets.
  • Your ingredients: compare your largest items to the 8.7 x 5.1 inch chute opening.
  • Slice range: confirm that 0 to 12 mm covers the cuts you want; it won't dice or shred.
  • Power: check the plug type and voltage for your region, and the manual's advice on run times.
  • Cleaning and blades: read how to remove and clean the blade safely, and how to obtain spares.
  • Surface: make sure the suction cups can grip your counter.

The short version

  • A countertop slicer with 0 to 0.5 inch (0-12 mm) adjustable thickness.
  • Electric operation with a spring-loaded feed, or manual use with the supplied handle.
  • Two 420J2 stainless steel blades and a stainless steel body.
  • Large 8.7 x 5.1 x 6.3 inch chute and six suction cups for stability.
  • About 18.6 lb (8.4 kg), so it needs a dedicated spot.
