This VEVOR aquarium filter is a 25W submersible unit with five filtration stages and a built-in UV lamp. VEVOR rates its pump at up to 528GPH (2,000 litres per hour) and recommends it for freshwater tanks of 200 to 250 gallons, including turtle tanks. Here is how its features work and what to check for your own tank.
What 528GPH really tells you
Flow rate shows how much water the pump can move in an hour. VEVOR notes that the figure was measured with no load, and that real flow decreases as the filter media fills up and as the water has to be lifted higher. In general, it is sensible to treat the number as a maximum rather than a working figure.
A common rule of thumb in the aquarium hobby is to circulate a tank's volume several times an hour, but the right turnover depends on the animals, so follow the guidance for your own setup.
Five stages of filtration
Water passes through layers of media, and each layer is held in place by a sponge. The filter also comes with ceramic rings and bio-balls. In general terms, sponges and similar media trap particles, while ceramic rings and bio-balls give beneficial bacteria a large surface to live on, which is how biological filtration works. VEVOR says the filter is designed to remove waste from fish and turtles and keep the water clear and oxygenated.
UV lamp with timer
The UV lamp has a timer that switches it on and off at 4, 8 or 24-hour intervals. Such lamps are commonly used to keep water looking clear. Follow the manual for lamp care and for never looking at the lamp while it is lit.
Flow control and oxygenation
A flow adjustment valve lets you set the output from maximum down to minimum, or shut it off completely. That is helpful if you keep animals that prefer calmer water. The inlet has an oil-film removal feature, which VEVOR says keeps the surface moving so more oxygen reaches the tank.
Motor and noise
The pump uses a pure copper brushless motor. VEVOR says the sound level is below 50 decibels, and that there is no air inside the filter, which helps keep flow high and noise down. Brushless motors typically run quietly and have fewer wearing parts than brushed designs.
Cleaning and sealing
A dual quick-release head design is meant to make taking the filter apart simple, and a thickened silicone ring is used to prevent leaks. VEVOR also says the rotor was redesigned, with both ends formed as one unit, to extend its lifespan.
Who it suits
It suits owners of larger freshwater tanks and turtle tanks who want mechanical, biological and UV treatment in one submerged unit. VEVOR also lists exhibition tanks and market tanks as uses.
What to check before you buy
- Tank size and type: the unit is recommended for 200-250 gallon freshwater tanks; confirm it suits yours.
- Space and depth: it is submersible, so make sure it fits inside the tank at your water level.
- Real flow: expect lower flow than 528GPH once the media gets dirty.
- Upkeep: check how often to rinse the media and replace the UV lamp.
- Power: it draws 25W; use a suitable outlet and follow the manual's electrical guidance.
The short version
- 25W submersible filter rated at 528GPH (2,000 L/H) with a copper brushless motor.
- Five filtration stages with sponges, ceramic rings and bio-balls.
- UV lamp with a 4/8/24-hour timer.
- Adjustable flow valve and a sound level under 50 decibels, according to VEVOR.
- Quick-release heads and silicone seals for cleaning and leak resistance.
