The VEVOR VP-528GPH-UV20W is a 20W aquarium filter with a built-in pump, several layers of filter media and a UV lamp. It is meant for larger freshwater tanks, with VEVOR recommending it for 125 to 200 gallons, and it also names turtle tanks. Its job is to pull water through the media, trap waste and keep the water clear and oxygenated.

What 396GPH means for a large tank

VEVOR gives the maximum flow as 396 gallons per hour (1,500 litres per hour). Flow figures like this are normally measured with no resistance, and VEVOR says as much: the tested figure is under no-load conditions and will drop as the filter gets used and as the height difference between filter and tank grows. As media collects debris, flow typically falls, which is why cleaning matters.

A common rule of thumb in the hobby is to look for a turnover of several tank volumes per hour. Because real flow is lower than the label, many keepers read the figure as a ceiling rather than a working figure. The 125-200 gallon range VEVOR recommends gives a sense of the intended tank size.

Five stages of filtration

Water passes through layers of media, and VEVOR says each layer has a sponge to hold it in place. The filter comes with ceramic rings and bio-balls. In general terms, sponges and similar coarse media catch visible particles, while ceramic rings and bio-balls give beneficial bacteria a large surface to live on. Those bacteria are what break down fish waste biologically, so the biological stage is usually the one you want to disturb least when cleaning.

The UV lamp and its timer

The 20W UV lamp has a timer that switches it on and off automatically at 4, 8 or 24-hour intervals. UV lamps in aquarium filters are typically used to help keep free-floating algae in check, and a timer lets you run the lamp for part of the day rather than constantly. Follow the manual for lamp handling and never look at the lamp while it is lit.

Quiet running and flow control

VEVOR describes an internal pure copper brushless motor and says there is no air inside the filter, which it ties to low power use and low noise. The stated sound level is under 50 decibels, roughly the level of a quiet room. A flow adjustment valve lets you turn the flow down from maximum to minimum, or shut it off, which helps when maintaining the unit or when a gentler current suits the animals in the tank.

The inlet has an oil-film removal feature intended to keep the surface clear and help gas exchange with the air above. Dual quick-release heads, a thickened silicone ring and quick-release joints are meant to make cleaning easier and reduce leak risk. The rotor has been redesigned as one integrated unit at both ends to extend its life, according to VEVOR.

Who it suits

The filter is aimed at home aquariums, turtle tanks and display tanks. It measures 19.7 x 13.4 x 10.2 inches and weighs 13.5 lb, so it needs real space beside or near the tank.

What to check before you buy

  • Your tank volume against the 125-200 gallon range, and whether you want that much flow for the species you keep.
  • Where the unit will sit and whether the tubing reaches, remembering that height differences reduce flow.
  • How you will handle the UV lamp, including replacement lamps over time.
  • Whether you are comfortable cleaning media on a regular schedule.
  • A suitable power outlet and drip loop for the cable, following the manual and local electrical codes.

The short version

  • 20W filter with a stated maximum of 396GPH (1,500 L/H), recommended for 125-200 gallon tanks.
  • Layered media with sponges, ceramic rings and bio-balls.
  • UV lamp with 4, 8 or 24-hour timer settings.
  • Brushless motor, under 50 dB according to VEVOR, with a flow valve.
  • Quick-release heads for easier maintenance.
