The VEVOR VS1J-S is a 250W electric slicer, shredder and grater for the kitchen. It is the sort of machine sometimes called a salad shooter. Feed in cheese, carrots, potatoes or fruit, and it shreds or slices them in seconds, which saves effort when preparing salads, toppings or large batches.

Motor and blades

VEVOR describes a 250W motor that handles firm ingredients such as carrots and potatoes, producing julienne or wavy slices. Five stainless steel blades come with it:

  • Coarse shredding
  • Fine shredding
  • Slicing
  • Wavy slicing
  • Grinding

Between them they cover shredded cheese, sliced bananas and apples, potato chips, and, as VEVOR says, ground peanut powder or crushed chocolate. VEVOR also says the blades stay sharp and rust-free with prolonged use. Stainless steel generally resists rust well, but drying blades after washing is sensible.

The feed chute

The wide chute measures 3.3 x 2.6 inches (77 x 65 mm). A larger opening means many vegetables and fruits can go in whole or in big pieces, instead of being cut down first. Chute size varies between machines, so compare it with the produce you use most, such as a large potato or block of cheese.

Changing blades

Blade changes use a rotating barrel. VEVOR says the blade barrel comes out by turning it counterclockwise, and the blades slot in. A safety lock means the machine only starts when the lock is properly in place, which is a useful guard against accidental starts. Always unplug the machine before changing blades, and keep fingers away from the cutting parts; use the pusher if one is supplied.

Cleaning

The stainless steel body can be wiped with a damp cloth. Blades detach and, according to VEVOR, can be rinsed under water or placed in the dishwasher. Check the manual for any parts that should not go in the dishwasher, and never put the motor base in water.

Size and weight

The unit measures about 11.0 x 5.3 x 12.0 inches (28 x 13.5 x 30.5 cm) and weighs around 5.1 lb (2.3 kg), so it can be kept on a counter or in a cupboard and moved easily. Like most machines of this type, it is meant for short bursts of use, not constant running, so check the manual for duty-cycle guidance.

Who it suits

It suits home cooks who shred a lot of cheese, make coleslaw or salads, prepare vegetables for large families, or bake and cook in batches. It is less useful for people who only grate small amounts occasionally, where a hand grater is quicker to clean.

What to check before you buy

  • Blade set: confirm the five blades cover the cuts you want.
  • Chute size: compare it with the size of your usual ingredients.
  • Counter space: allow room for the machine and a bowl beneath the outlet.
  • Food types: check the manual on what the machine should and shouldn't process, especially hard or frozen items.
  • Cleaning: check which parts are dishwasher-safe.
  • Power: check the voltage and plug type for your region.
  • What's included: confirm whether a pusher and bowl come in the box.
