The R.W.FLAME 60-inch electric fireplace gives a room the look of a fire without a chimney or a gas line. It can be recessed into a wall or mounted on one, and its heater adds supplemental warmth to a space of up to 400 square feet. The flame effect works with or without heat, so you can enjoy the look alone in warm weather.
A 3.86-inch-deep frame
The fireplace measures 60 inches wide, 18.11 inches high and 3.86 inches deep (about 152 x 46 x 10 cm), and it weighs 47.7 lb (about 21.6 kg). R.W.FLAME says this design is slimmer than its earlier 6-inch-deep version and works the same way, with a redesigned position for the main power and the power cable.
That depth is what lets it fit into a wall framed with 2 x 6 studs. A 2 x 6 is a nominal lumber size: the actual stud is about 5.5 inches (14 cm) deep, which leaves room for the 3.86-inch body. It can sit fully or partly recessed, and vents along the top draw air in and send the warm air out.
Flame colours, speed and brightness
There are 12 flame colours and 12 LED colours for the ember bed, along with 5 flame speeds and 5 brightness levels. An automatic mode changes the flame colour and brightness on its own. With that many combinations, you can choose a warm, traditional look or a bolder colour that suits the room.
The flame effect runs separately from the heater, so it can glow on a summer evening without adding any heat.
Touch panel and remote with timer
Everything can be set on the touch panel on the front or with the remote control. The remote includes a timer, so you can have the fireplace switch off after a set time instead of remembering to turn it off yourself.
Heat output: 750W or 1500W
The heater runs at 750W or 1500W and provides supplemental zone heating for up to 400 square feet (about 37 square metres). Zone heating means warming the room you're using rather than the whole house, alongside your main heating system. In heating terms, 1500W is about 5,100 BTU per hour, which is typical of many portable electric heaters; the 750W setting gives gentler heat.
Certification and overheat protection
The fireplace is ETL certified. The ETL mark comes from Intertek, a testing laboratory recognised in North America, and shows that a product has been tested to the applicable safety standards. It also has an automatic heat cut-off to protect against overheating.
As with any electric heater, follow the manual for installation, clearances and the electrical connection, and keep furniture, curtains and other items as far away as it specifies.
It suits living rooms and other living spaces where you want the look of a fireplace in a slim, built-in or wall-mounted form, with heat when you want it.
What to check before you buy
- Wall framing: for a recessed installation, check that your wall is framed with 2 x 6 studs, and check the opening size in the manual.
- Power: check the electrical requirements and where the cable and outlet will go; a new outlet in the wall is a job for a qualified electrician.
- Wall mounting: at 47.7 lb, it needs secure fixing into the wall, as the manual describes.
- Room size: compare the 400 sq ft figure with your room, and remember it's supplemental heat.
- Placement: follow the clearances in the manual, especially around furniture and soft furnishings.
