The FLYBIRD SR1 is a half squat rack for home gyms, with a foam-padded pull-up bar, extended J-hooks, 16.7-inch safety arms and a landmine attachment. It is built to fit a spare room, garage or basement on a footprint of about one square metre. Here is what its frame, adjustments and attachments mean when you plan a home setup.
What a half rack is
A half rack holds a barbell on two uprights, with J-hooks to rest the bar on and safety arms that sit lower down. Unlike a full power cage, it is open around the lifting area and takes up less floor space, which is why half racks are common in garages and smaller rooms. The SR1 adds a pull-up bar across the top and attachments for other movements.
Steel frame and load capacity
The frame uses 2 x 2-inch commercial-grade steel tubing, and FLYBIRD lists a capacity of up to 950 lb (about 430 kg). That figure is the brand's, and it refers to the rack itself; the bar, plates and any attachments all count toward the load. As with any rack, assemble it exactly as the manual describes and check the bolts from time to time.
22 height positions and 1-inch holes
The uprights have 22 height settings with standard 1-inch holes. The J-hooks and safety arms move between them, so you can set the bar height for squats, bench presses or shoulder presses, and for lifters of different heights. Many rack attachments are made for 2 x 2-inch tubing with 1-inch holes, so FLYBIRD notes that the SR1 works with a wide range of standard add-ons. Check the tube and hole size of anything you plan to add.
Width and floor space
The width adjusts so the rack fits most 6 ft and 7 ft barbells, which matters because shorter bars and full-length bars sit at different spacings. The listed footprint is about 39 x 41.3 inches (99 x 105 cm), and the rack stands 83 inches (about 2.1 m) tall.
Height is often the deciding point in a basement. Leave room above the pull-up bar for your head, and room around the rack to load plates and walk the bar in and out.
Safety arms, landmine and band pegs
The extended safety arms are 16.7 inches long and made of solid 1.2 x 1.2-inch steel, with protective liners to cushion the barbell and the rack. Safety arms, sometimes called spotter arms, are set just below the lowest point of a lift so the bar has somewhere to rest if you can't finish a rep. Setting them correctly for each exercise is up to the user.
The landmine attachment holds one end of a barbell so the other end can be pressed or rowed in an arc, for exercises such as T-bar rows. Six pegs hold resistance bands for band-resisted squats and similar work, and the pull-up bar has foam padding. Assembly comes with written instructions and a step-by-step guide.
Who it suits
It suits people building a home gym in a garage, basement or spare room who want a barbell rack, a pull-up bar and a few extra options without a full cage. It fits best where floor space is limited but ceiling height allows the 83-inch uprights.
What to check before you buy
- Ceiling height: the rack is 83 inches tall; allow extra room above the pull-up bar.
- Floor space: about 39 x 41.3 inches for the rack, plus space to load plates around it.
- Your barbell: confirm the width setting suits your 6 ft or 7 ft bar.
- Attachments: check that add-ons are made for 2 x 2-inch tubing with 1-inch holes.
- Flooring: a rubber mat helps protect floors under a loaded rack.
- What's included: the J-hooks, safety arms, landmine attachment and band pegs.
