The Dreo DR-HEC001-2 is a 40-inch floor-standing tower fan that doubles as an evaporative air cooler. Instead of simply moving air, it passes it through a wet cooling pad, aiming for a cooler, slightly more humid breeze. Here is how that works and what to check before choosing one.

How an evaporative cooler differs from a fan

An ordinary fan moves air and helps sweat evaporate from your skin. An evaporative cooler goes one step further: warm, dry air is drawn across a damp pad, and as the water evaporates it takes heat from the air. Dreo says the air returns to the room as a cooler breeze at a comfortable humidity level.

This works best in dry or moderately humid climates. In already humid air, evaporation slows and the cooling effect is typically smaller. It is not an air conditioner, and it does not remove humidity from the room.

Ice packs and water tank

The product is sold with ice packs. Adding frozen packs to the water tank chills the water the pad draws on, which can make the airflow feel cooler for a while. The tank, cooling pad and rear grille are all removable, which Dreo says makes cleaning easy.

Airflow and quiet running

Dreo uses a crossflow impeller wheel, a long cylindrical design typical of tower fans, and says it smooths out noise for sleeping or working. The impeller runs at 1,300 rpm, with four speeds and three modes. Dreo rates the airflow at up to 21.65 ft/s (about 6.6 m/s) and up to 13,000 cubic feet per hour. An 80° oscillation spreads the air across a wider part of the room.

Remote control

A remote controls the settings. The listing notes a CR2025 3V coin-cell battery for the remote.

Size

The cooler stands 39.7 inches (about 100 cm) tall, with an 11.4 x 11.4 inch (about 29 cm) footprint, and weighs 13.2 lb (about 6 kg). That is a slim profile compared with many fans, and it can sit beside a sofa or desk.

Who it suits

It suits people in dry or mild-humidity climates who want a tower fan with an added cooling effect for a bedroom, home office or living area. It is meant for personal, single-room use rather than cooling an entire home.

What to check before you buy

  • Climate: evaporative cooling works best in dry air; check typical summer humidity where you live.
  • Water: the tank needs refilling, and the pad and tank need regular cleaning. Check how often the manual advises.
  • Placement: keep it on a level surface away from electronics and where spilled water won't matter.
  • Freezer space: ice packs need to be frozen ahead of time.
  • Noise: confirm your preferred speed is quiet enough for the room, particularly at night.
  • Spare parts: check how replacement pads and the remote battery are sourced.
