The Antarctic Star T36 is a 36-inch tower fan with a DC brushless motor, a remote and an LED display. It is tall and narrow, so it moves air across a room from a base about a foot across. Here is what its airflow and noise figures mean, and how it fits into a bedroom, living room or office.
What bladeless means on a tower fan
Tower fans have no exposed blades. Air is drawn in through a grille at the back and pushed out through a tall outlet at the front, and most designs use a long, drum-shaped impeller hidden inside the housing. The tall outlet spreads the airflow over more of your body than a small round fan at the same height would.
Airflow: 27 ft/s and 1,059 ft³/min
Antarctic Star lists an air speed above 27 feet per second (about 8.2 m/s) and airflow of more than 1,059 cubic feet per minute (about 30 m³ per minute). Air speed describes how fast the stream leaves the fan, which is what you feel when you sit in front of it. Airflow describes the volume of air the fan moves, which matters more for circulating air around a room. Both are the brand's own figures, and they will be at the top speed.
The T36 also oscillates across 90 degrees, so it can sweep a seating area or a bed instead of pointing at one spot.
The DC brushless motor
Fans with DC motors typically use less electricity than similar AC models and can offer finer speed steps, and a brushless motor has no carbon brushes to wear out. Many DC fans are also quieter at their lowest settings, which matters most in a bedroom.
Speeds, modes and noise
There are six speeds and four modes:
- Normal gives a steady breeze at the speed you choose.
- Nature varies the airflow to feel more like an outdoor breeze.
- Sleep lowers the fan speed automatically over time.
- Smart adjusts the airflow automatically, as the brand describes it.
A timer can be set for up to 9 hours. Antarctic Star lists noise as low as 22 dB at low speed. For context, a quiet bedroom at night is typically around 30 dB, so the lowest setting should be very quiet. The brand does not give noise figures for the higher speeds, which will be louder.
Controls and everyday use
Touch buttons on top control the fan, and a child lock stops the settings from being changed by accident. The LED display dims 30 seconds after use, so it doesn't light up a dark bedroom. The remote fits into a slot on the back of the fan.
A handle is built into the top, so you can move the fan from room to room. The rear grille comes off without tools. Dust tends to build up on fan grilles and intakes over a season, and a removable grille makes it easier to clean.
Size and placement
The T36 stands about 35.8 inches (91 cm) tall on a 12.3-inch (31 cm) base and weighs about 7.3 lb (3.3 kg). The base attaches without tools. Leave some space behind the fan so the rear intake isn't blocked.
Who it suits
It suits bedrooms, living rooms and home offices where floor space is tight, and people who want a quiet low setting, a remote and a timer for the night.
What to check before you buy
- Space: check the height and the base size against where you plan to put it.
- Noise: the 22 dB figure is for the lowest speed; expect more noise at higher speeds.
- Cooling: fans cool people by moving air across the skin; they don't lower the room's temperature the way an air conditioner does.
- Upkeep: plan to clean the rear grille now and then to keep the airflow up.
- Controls: decide whether you need the remote, timer and child lock.
