The Dreame SH10 is a steam mop with a detachable handheld steamer, so one 3.8 lb (1.7 kg) tool covers the floors as well as kitchen and bathroom surfaces. It cleans with plain water turned to steam, aimed at grease, grime and the dirt that collects in grout lines and crevices. Here's how it works and what to check for your home.

How steam cleaning works

The SH10 makes steam at 212°F (100°C), the boiling point of water. Heat softens grease and loosens stuck-on grime, so it can be wiped or flushed away without chemical cleaners. Dreame lists up to 55 mL per minute of jet steam, together with pressurised hot water to flush residue out of crevices.

Because it uses only water, there's no cleaning product to measure out or rinse off afterwards. Heavier soiling may still need a second pass or a brush attachment.

Heat-up time

Dreame lists a 15-second heat-up. In practice, steam starts after about 20 to 40 seconds, depending on the length of the nozzle you've fitted, since longer attachments take a little more time for steam to reach the tip. That's quick enough for short touch-up jobs as well as longer cleaning sessions.

Floors and carpets

On the floor, the mop head works on tile, marble, wood and laminate. A carpet glider fits over the mop head so it can move across carpet too, which is useful for freshening up rugs between deeper cleans.

Steam isn't suited to every floor, though. Many flooring makers advise against steam on unsealed wood, unsealed stone or some types of laminate, because heat and moisture can work into gaps and seams. Check your floor's care guidance before you start, and test a small, out-of-sight area first.

The handheld and its accessories

Detach the handheld unit, about the size of a kettle, to steam kitchen grease and bathroom grime on walls and counters. The "13-in-1" in its name refers to its 13 interchangeable accessories.

Among them:

  • a jet nozzle for concentrated steam in tight spots;
  • three brushes for grout lines, door seals and stubborn grime;
  • a flexible hose for reaching around and behind fixtures;
  • a glass squeegee for windows, mirrors and shower screens.

Dreame suggests uses from grout and door seals to grills, stovetops and windows, so the handheld does much of the work a separate degreaser and window cleaner would.

In the box and upkeep

Mop pads, a measuring cup and a citric acid descaler come in the box. Descaling matters on any steam cleaner: minerals in tap water build up as scale inside the boiler over time, and a descaler dissolves them. How often you need to do it depends on how hard your water is, and the manual gives the routine.

It suits homes with plenty of hard floors, tile and kitchen grease, where one tool can take on floors, the stovetop and the shower.

What to check before you buy

  • Your floors: whether they're sealed, and what the flooring maker says about steam.
  • Surfaces: steam isn't suited to everything; check delicate, painted or heat-sensitive surfaces and test first.
  • Tank and power: the water tank size and power cord details, which aren't in the headline specs.
  • Mop pads: how they're washed and whether replacements are easy to get.
  • Safe use: steam and hot water can scald, so keep the nozzle pointed away from people and pets and follow the manual.
  • In the box: mop pads, a carpet glider, a measuring cup, descaler and the accessories.
