The Aorda AR-NS-038 is a vertical slow juicer in matte grey. It presses fruit and vegetables with a slowly turning auger rather than shredding them with a fast blade, and Aorda sells it as a compact option for small kitchens.

How a masticating juicer works

A masticating, or slow, juicer crushes produce against a screen with a rotating screw. Centrifugal juicers, by contrast, spin a blade at high speed. Aorda says its juicer turns at 50 RPM and that this slow action extracts juice with minimal oxidation and keeps the natural taste of the ingredients. In general, slow juicers are known for taking more juice from leafy greens and soft fruit, and for producing less foam. Juice from any machine is best drunk fresh, as it changes in flavour and texture when left to stand.

Motor and noise

The motor is rated at 200W. Aorda lists an anti-clogging design to keep the juicer running continuously and to increase juice yield. It quotes an operating noise of 65dB, which is roughly the level of normal conversation, and describes this as quiet enough for early mornings. Actual sound depends on the produce and the surface it sits on.

Feed inlets

The juicer has dual inlets, measuring 76 mm and 45 mm. The wider chute is meant for whole fruit and vegetables, so there is less cutting. The narrower one takes longer, thinner items such as carrots or celery. Aorda says this cuts preparation time. Even with a wide chute, firm produce usually goes in more smoothly if cut into a few pieces, and the manual may give size guidance.

Size and weight

The juicer measures about 7.2 x 7.6 x 17.4 inches (18 x 19 x 44 cm) and weighs 7.9 lb (about 3.6 kg). The narrow footprint is helpful on a crowded counter, but allow headroom for the height when placing it under a wall cabinet.

Cleaning

Aorda says the juicer comes apart easily, that parts can be rinsed under running water, and that a brush is included for the screen and other parts. With slow juicers, rinsing straight after use stops pulp from drying onto the screen, which tends to make cleaning easier.

Who it suits

It suits home cooks who want fresh juice from fruit and vegetables, who have limited counter space, and who value a lower noise level. Slow juicing takes longer than a fast machine, so it is a better match for people who do not mind a few minutes per batch.

What to check before you buy

  • Produce you juice: check the manual on leafy greens, hard roots and fibrous items.
  • Chute size: whether 76 mm fits your usual fruit, and whether you will still cut things up.
  • Counter and cabinet height: about 17.4 inches tall.
  • Parts and cleaning: how many parts there are, which are dishwasher safe, and whether the brush is included.
  • Run time: the manual may set limits on continuous use.
  • Pulp and juice containers: confirm what's in the box and their capacity.
