The AMZCHEF ZM1501 is a slow masticating juicer, often called a cold press juicer, for turning fruit and vegetables into juice at home. It has a reverse function to clear jams, a small feed chute, and a brush for cleaning. It also accepts optional attachments, which turn it into a grinder or slicer. Here is what that adds up to.

How a masticating juicer works

A masticating juicer uses a slowly turning auger, or screw, to crush and press produce, rather than shredding it with a fast spinning blade. AMZCHEF says its "7 spiral" design is built for maximum juice yield and minimal oxidation. In general, slower juicers produce less foam and handle leafy greens and fibrous produce, such as ginger and celery, better than fast centrifugal models. They are usually quieter too, though AMZCHEF notes a rubbing sound while the machine works is normal.

The small feed chute

The ZM1501 has a small chute, which means you cut produce into smaller pieces before feeding it in. AMZCHEF presents this as a plus: it lets you remove seeds as you cut, which the brand says reduces bitterness, and it keeps fingers away from the moving parts. The trade-off is more prep than a wide-chute machine, which may take whole apples.

Reverse function and protection

When fibrous produce jams the auger, the reverse function turns it backwards to free it, and AMZCHEF says it also helps with cleaning. The juicer includes what the brand calls intelligent protection chips, which are a built-in safeguard against overload. If the machine stops, follow the manual before restarting.

Cleaning and materials

A brush is included for the strainer. AMZCHEF says the detachable parts are food-grade, oxidation-resistant materials, and warns they are not resistant to strong acids. It advises against juicing large amounts of lemon in one go and recommends cleaning promptly after use. Rinsing parts straight after juicing is generally the easiest approach, as pulp dries and clings to mesh.

Optional attachments

The unit has an attachment hub. AMZCHEF says a meat grinder and a slicer-shredder can be added, but those are sold separately and are not part of this product.

Size, voltage and warranty

The juicer measures 10.6 x 10.6 x 7.0 inches (about 27 x 27 x 18 cm). It is made for US voltage of 110-120V, so it needs a suitable outlet or converter elsewhere. AMZCHEF lists a 2-year guarantee on the motor and 2 years on normal accessory replacement.

Who it suits

It suits households that juice regularly and are happy to trade a little prep and slower speed for a quieter machine and good handling of leafy and fibrous produce. It also suits cooks who may want to add a grinder or slicer attachment later.

What to check before you buy

  • Prep time: the small chute means cutting produce into smaller pieces.
  • Voltage: it's listed for 110-120V.
  • Counter and storage space: check the footprint against your kitchen.
  • Cleaning: be ready to rinse the parts straight after use and use the brush.
  • Attachments: the grinder and slicer are separate purchases.
