The AMZCHEF Portable Range Hood is a small exhaust fan that stands on the counter beside the pan and draws cooking smoke into its filters. It needs no ducting or installation, which makes it an option for kitchens without a hood, rental apartments, RVs and tabletop cooking such as indoor grilling or hot pot. Here is how it works and what its specs mean.
How a recirculating hood works
Most fixed range hoods either vent air outdoors through a duct or recirculate it through filters back into the room. This one recirculates. Air is pulled through a filter screen that catches grease, then through dual carbon filters meant to trap smoke and odours, and AMZCHEF rates the airflow at 120 CFM (cubic feet per minute).
Recirculating hoods don't send heat or steam outside, so a window or another source of ventilation still helps when you cook something steamy. Because the hood sits right next to the pan rather than high above it, it can catch fumes close to where they rise. Full-size hoods typically move several hundred CFM; a desktop unit works with much less airflow, so placement matters.
Getting the position right
The arm extends by 72mm (about 2.8 inches) and the head tilts through 40°, from -20° to +20°. AMZCHEF says that lets it line up with pots, woks and grill plates up to 12 inches tall. A non-slip base is meant to keep it steady while you stir-fry.
To catch as much smoke as possible, aim the opening at the cooking surface from the side, at roughly the height where smoke and steam leave the pan.
Speeds, light and noise
There are four fan speeds, from a gentle setting for simmering to a high setting for stir-frying, and the maximum speed runs continuously without a time limit. Touch controls on top switch speeds and the light.
A dimmable ring light around the opening lights up the cooking surface, which helps on a counter or table without overhead task lighting. AMZCHEF rates the noise below 63dB. For comparison, normal conversation is commonly put at around 60dB, so it is audible but not loud.
Cleaning and filters
The filter screen at the front is dishwasher-safe and comes off easily, and an oil collection cup under the head gathers drips. The carbon filter pads need replacing over time as they absorb grease and odours; ten replacement filter cotton pads come in the box, along with a power adapter.
Where it fits
AMZCHEF describes this as its second-generation portable hood, aimed at tiny kitchens, apartments, RVs and indoor barbecue or hot pot meals. The listing images mark it for electric and induction cooktops, and not for gas burners or open flames, so it isn't meant for a camping stove or a gas hob. Follow the manual on placement and on the distance from heat.
What to check before you buy
- Your cooktop: it is shown for electric and induction cooking, not gas or open flame.
- Pot height: check that your tallest pans fit within the 12-inch range.
- Counter space: allow room for the stand beside the cooktop and for the power cable.
- Filter upkeep: plan for replacing carbon pads and washing the screen.
- Ventilation: recirculation filters smoke but doesn't remove heat or steam from the room.
