The AMZCHEF cold press juicer is a slow masticating juicer with a 6.5-inch wide, self-feeding chute. Built-in cutting blades break down larger fruits and vegetables as they go in, so there is less chopping before you start. With a second filter, it also makes nut milk and frozen fruit sorbet. Here is what its features mean in everyday use.

How a slow masticating juicer works

A masticating juicer uses a screw-shaped auger that turns slowly, crushing produce and pressing it against a fine strainer. Juice runs out through one spout and the dry pulp leaves through another. Because it works by pressing rather than shredding at high speed, this type of juicer is usually quieter than a high-speed model and copes well with leafy greens and fibrous vegetables. The trade-off is that juicing takes a little longer.

AMZCHEF says this model has a larger auger that applies high pressure at low speed, driven by a 600W max motor.

The 6.5-inch reversible chute

The feed chute is 6.5 inches (about 16.5 cm) wide and reversible, with built-in cutting blades. That means many fruits and vegetables can go in whole or in large pieces, and the self-feeding design pulls them down to the auger. As with any juicer, follow the manual on which pits, stones and tough peels to remove first.

AMZCHEF gives one assembly tip: keep the lid open when fitting or removing the chute.

Less clogging and the reverse function

Fibrous produce such as celery and ginger can wrap around an auger and slow it down. AMZCHEF says the upgraded juicing chamber and the reverse function help reduce clogging. On most slow juicers, reverse turns the auger backwards for a moment to free trapped fibres, so you can carry on without taking the machine apart.

Juice, nut milk and sorbet

Two interchangeable filters come with the juicer. According to the product images, one is for juice and nut milk, and the other for sorbet. For nut milk, the images suggest soaking the nuts overnight for a smoother, richer texture. For sorbet, frozen fruit goes through the sorbet filter and comes out soft and spoonable, and the images suggest letting it sit for about 10 minutes first. Having all three in one machine saves counter space compared with separate appliances.

Assembly and cleaning

The juicing body detaches as one piece and locks back in place with a simple mechanism; AMZCHEF says it can be ready in about five seconds. A specialised cleaning brush is included for the strainer, where fine pulp tends to collect. With any slow juicer, rinsing the parts straight after use, before the pulp dries, makes cleaning much quicker.

Who it suits

It suits people who juice fruits and vegetables regularly and want less preparation, and households that would also use homemade nut milk or fruit sorbet. If you mainly juice leafy greens or fibrous vegetables, the slow pressing method is well suited to them.

What to check before you buy

  • Space: measure the height under your wall cabinets, since upright slow juicers are tall.
  • Your produce: think about what you juice most and how much preparation it still needs.
  • Cleaning: allow a few minutes after each use to rinse the strainer and auger.
  • What's included: check for both filters and the cleaning brush.
  • Juicing time: slow juicers take longer per glass than high-speed models.
