The AAOBOSI DBJ-1 is a countertop vacuum sealer for wet and dry foods. It draws the air out of a bag and closes it with a double heat seal, for portioning meat, prepping meals, freezing leftovers or cooking sous vide. Here is what its specs mean and how its nine modes work.
How a vacuum sealer like this works
The DBJ-1 is an external, or channel, sealer: the open end of the bag sits in a channel under the lid, a pump draws the air out, and a heated strip then melts the bag shut. Sealers of this type need textured or embossed vacuum bags, since the pattern gives the air a path out. Smooth bags don't evacuate properly.
Removing the air is what makes vacuum sealing useful. Food in airtight, air-free bags is typically far less prone to freezer burn, and the bags take up less room in a freezer. Vacuum sealing doesn't replace refrigeration or freezing, though: perishable food still needs to be kept cold.
What 95kPa and 12 L/s mean
AAOBOSI rates the pump at 95kPa of suction with an airflow of 12 litres per second. Normal air pressure at sea level is about 101kPa, so a 95kPa figure means the pump can remove most of the air from the bag. The airflow figure describes how quickly the pump moves air, which affects how long each bag takes.
The double heat seal lays down two parallel seal lines rather than one. If one line has a weak spot, for example from a fold or a drop of liquid, the second still holds the vacuum.
Nine modes, three pressures and a pulse button
The nine modes come from combining three pressure levels with three sealing times. The pressure levels are 20, 60 and 95kPa. Lower pressure suits crisp or soft foods such as chips, bread or berries that would be crushed at full vacuum, while full pressure suits meat and firm foods.
Sealing time controls how long the heat strip runs. Moist foods and marinades generally need a longer seal, because a damp bag edge is harder to melt shut. A manual pulse mode lets you run the pump in short bursts and stop when the bag is tight enough, which helps with delicate foods and with liquids.
With very wet foods, it is common practice to leave extra space at the top of the bag, or to part-freeze soups and sauces first, so liquid isn't drawn towards the seal.
Smart memory and one-hand operation
The sealer remembers the last setting you used, so when you are sealing a batch of the same food, you just press start for each bag. The low-force handle presses and locks the lid with one hand, which helps when you're holding a full bag in the other.
In the box and size
The sealer comes with bag rolls, pre-cut bags and an accessory hose. A canister button on the control panel works with the hose for vacuum containers, which aren't listed as included.
It measures about 15.9 x 4.1 x 8.0 inches (40 x 10 x 20 cm) and weighs 4.6 lb (2.1 kg), so it can sit on a counter or go into a cupboard between uses.
Who it suits
It suits people who buy meat or fish in bulk and portion it for the freezer, meal preppers, and anyone who cooks sous vide. The wet modes and pulse control make it a fit for kitchens that seal marinades and moist foods as well as dry goods.
What to check before you buy
- Bags: confirm which bag sizes and widths fit the sealing channel, and where you'll get refills.
- Wet foods: check the manual's guidance for liquids and marinades.
- Counter space: allow for a footprint of about 16 x 4 inches, plus room for the bag in front.
- Containers: if you want to seal canisters, check which containers work with the accessory hose.
- Upkeep: plan to wipe the channel and gaskets after sealing moist foods.
