The VEVOR HS-660 is an air horn kit with four trumpets, an air tank and a 12V compressor. VEVOR rates it at 150dB and says it works on any vehicle with a 12V electrical system, from pickup trucks to boats.

What's in the kit

According to VEVOR, the kit includes four trumpet horns, a solenoid valve, a 1.6-gallon (6-litre) tank, a compressor and pipes. The tank has a pressure gauge and a drain plug for releasing water. VEVOR notes that the power switch and cord are not included, so plan to buy a switch and wiring to suit your vehicle.

How an air horn works

The compressor fills the tank with air. When you press the switch, the solenoid valve opens and releases the compressed air through the trumpets, which produces the loud, low tone. Storing air in a tank means the horn can sound at full volume without the compressor running at the same time.

The compressor and pressure range

The compressor works between 90 and 120 psi. VEVOR says it starts filling below 90 psi and stops above 120 psi, which protects against overpressure. The compressor motor has fuses and a 100°C temperature-controlled overload protection, and the PA gas pipe is listed as withstanding up to 120°C.

Build and vibration control

VEVOR says the kit is made from heavy-duty zinc alloy and steel with an anti-rust coating, and that the tank is tightly welded to minimise leaks. A thick rubber cushion goes between the tank and the vehicle underside to reduce noise and vibration. The listing gives the dimensions as 14.2 x 5.5 x 5.5 inches and the weight as 13.4 lb, so check the space available for the tank and compressor under your vehicle.

What 150dB means

Decibels are a logarithmic scale, so small numeric differences represent large changes in loudness. A standard car horn is typically around 100 to 110dB. VEVOR describes the sound as carrying well on long drives, bends and in poor weather. A horn this loud can be harmful to hearing at close range, so keep clear of the trumpets when it's sounded.

Who it suits

It suits owners of trucks, SUVs, vans, boats and similar 12V vehicles who want a louder horn than the factory one. Rules on air horns differ by region and vehicle type, so check your local laws on horn volume and use before fitting one.

What to check before you buy

  • Local rules: confirm that train-style horns are permitted on your vehicle and where you can use them.
  • Switch and wiring: the switch and cord aren't included; you'll need appropriate wire, fuse and relay for a 12V system.
  • Space: find room for the tank, compressor and four trumpets, with the compressor away from water and heat.
  • Installation: air fittings, wiring and mounting are best done carefully; follow the manual.
  • Upkeep: drain moisture from the tank through the drain plug and check fittings for leaks.
  • Hearing: the horn is very loud, including for you and others nearby.

The short version

  • A four-trumpet air horn kit that VEVOR rates at 150dB.
  • 1.6-gallon tank, compressor working at 90-120 psi, solenoid valve and gauge.
  • 12V compatibility; switch and cord are not included.
  • Zinc alloy and steel construction with a rubber vibration cushion.
