The VEVOR extendable ladder rack is a black steel rack that sits over the bed of a full-size pickup truck. It gives you a raised carrying surface for long or bulky loads, such as ladders, lumber, kayaks and surfboards, and it mounts without drilling into the truck.

Adjustable width

The rack extends from 46 to 71 inches (about 117 to 180 cm). That range is meant to fit the width between the bed rails on a range of full-size pickups. Bed widths vary by make, model and year, so measure the distance across your own bed where the rack will sit and compare it with this range.

VEVOR notes that the rack does not fit trucks with a toolbox, utility track or tonneau cover. Those items occupy the same space on the bed rails, so remove them or look at another kind of rack if you have them.

Steel construction

VEVOR says the rack is built from alloy steel with reinforced crossbars and a triangular gusset that adds stability. Triangular bracing is a common way to stop a frame from flexing or racking sideways under load. The finish is black powder coating, and the end caps on the tubes are there to keep water and debris out of the inside, which VEVOR says helps prevent rust and corrosion.

Load capacity

The maximum load is 800 lb (363 kg), according to VEVOR. Treat that as an upper limit, and keep in mind that your truck's own load limits for the bed rails, and any local rules for carrying loads, also apply. Spread weight evenly along the crossbars rather than concentrating it in one place.

No-drill mounting

The rack mounts with four J-bolts, and VEVOR says the mounting hardware is included. J-bolts hook under the bed rail and tighten from above, so no holes are drilled in the truck, and the rack can be taken off again when you want. VEVOR says this avoids damaging the truck's side beam. Follow the instructions for tightening, and recheck the fastenings from time to time, since vibration can loosen hardware.

Tying loads down

Hooks on the side of the rack take two ratchet straps for tying down bulky items. Strapping is essential on any rack: loads should be secured at several points, and long items should be checked for overhang and visibility. Rules about flags or lights on overhanging loads differ by area, so check the local requirements.

Size and weight

The packed item measures about 15.2 x 7.9 x 31.1 inches and weighs 46 lb (about 21 kg). Expect to need a second pair of hands for fitting.

Who it suits

It suits people with a full-size pickup who regularly carry ladders, lumber, kayaks, surfboards or tents, such as tradespeople, paddlers and surfers, and who want a removable rack that doesn't need drilling.

What to check before you buy

  • Bed width: measure between the rails where the rack will sit and compare it with 46-71 inches.
  • Existing accessories: the rack doesn't fit trucks with toolboxes, utility tracks or tonneau covers.
  • Rail design: check that the J-bolts can hook under your bed rails, using the manual.
  • Load limits: consider your truck's own load limits as well as the rack's 800 lb.
  • Straps: you need ratchet straps, and check whether any are included.
  • Upkeep: inspect the bolts and coating periodically.
