The VEVOR folding hitch cargo carrier is a steel basket that slides into a vehicle's 2-inch hitch receiver, adding a cargo platform behind the vehicle. It is for the things that don't fit inside or that you'd rather not carry in the cabin: camping gear, coolers, muddy equipment or luggage on a family road trip.

Size and capacity

The basket measures 60 inches long, 24 inches wide and 6 inches deep. VEVOR gives a capacity of up to 500 lb of cargo. That figure is the carrier's own limit, not your vehicle's. The hitch receiver, the hitch and the vehicle each have their own towing and tongue-weight limits, and the lowest of these governs. Check your owner's manual before loading anything heavy, and remember the weight of the carrier itself counts.

Frame and finish

The carrier is built from heavy-duty steel with 5 mm supporting tubes and a hook stabilizer, which VEVOR says gives more stability on bumpy roads. A black powder-coat finish protects against rust, corrosion and weather. Steel with powder coating usually lasts well outdoors, though chips in the coating are worth touching up.

What's in the kit

A lot is included:

  • Cargo net and ratchet straps to hold items in place.
  • A waterproof cargo bag for wet weather, which can be packed into its own storage bag when not in use.
  • A coded lock to secure the load. A lock like this deters casual theft, but it is not a vault.
  • Reflectors on the frame, added for visibility at night.

Even with the kit, make sure the load is tied down evenly and checked periodically on long journeys.

Folding and storage

When it is not in use, the carrier folds so it takes less space, and VEVOR says that a folded carrier looks tidier and safer on a vehicle than a protruding empty basket. A folded unit is also easier to keep in a garage or trunk.

Vehicle compatibility

VEVOR says it fits any vehicle with a 2-inch hitch receiver: cars, SUVs, vans and pickup trucks. A receiver is the square tube under the rear bumper. Before ordering, confirm your hitch size and that the receiver is rated for the weight you want to carry.

Driving with a rear carrier

A loaded carrier extends the vehicle's length and can block a licence plate, tail lights or the rear camera and sensors. Local rules often require plates and lights to remain visible. It can also affect handling and rear clearance on slopes and driveways. Check the rules where you drive.

Who it suits

It suits people who camp, tow nothing but still need space, families with a full cabin, and workers moving equipment in a pickup or van.

What to check before you buy

  • Hitch size and limits: confirm a 2-inch receiver and its rated tongue weight.
  • Ground clearance: consider your vehicle's departure angle and the carrier's drop.
  • Lights and plate: make sure a loaded carrier doesn't hide them.
  • Rear access: check whether the tailgate, hatch or doors can still open with it fitted.
  • Weight and securing: weigh your load, and use the straps as the manual describes.
