The VEVOR YU85999 is a 6.5-litre (1.74-gallon) fluid extractor. Instead of draining oil from underneath, you feed a thin tube down the dipstick tube and pull the fluid out through the top. That makes it a tidy option for engine oil changes and other jobs, especially where crawling under a vehicle is awkward.

How a fluid extractor works

The tank is sealed. Pumping, either by hand or with compressed air, creates a vacuum inside it, and atmospheric pressure then pushes fluid up the tube into the tank. When you are done you pour the fluid out into a container for proper disposal. VEVOR describes a four-step routine: choose a tube, remove the dipstick, pump the fluid out and pour it off.

Manual and pneumatic modes

The pump works two ways. In manual mode you operate it by hand, with no extra equipment. In pneumatic mode it uses compressed air, which VEVOR says is faster. That suits the workshop, while manual mode is handy in a driveway or a boat. Check the manual for the air pressure and fittings the pneumatic mode needs, because a compressor isn't included.

Tubes and hoses included

According to VEVOR, the kit contains:

  • the 6.5L tank and main tube, quoted at 249 x 1000 mm;
  • extension tube 1, 7 x 1200 mm;
  • extension tube 2, 6 x 1200 mm;
  • a suction hose, 8 x 1480 mm;
  • a dipstick, two sealing rings and a user manual.

Tubes of different diameters let you reach different dipstick tubes, and the suction hose can draw from an open reservoir or tank. The size of the tube matters: it must fit the dipstick tube or opening on your own engine.

Which fluids it handles

VEVOR lists engine oil, gear oil, power steering fluid and brake fluid. It describes uses from cars and motorcycles to boats, lawnmowers and tractors. Check the manual before using the pump on any fluid, particularly brake fluid, which damages many materials and needs careful handling. Used oil and other fluids should go to a proper recycling point; follow local rules.

Size

The assembled unit measures about 8.3 x 8.7 x 21.7 inches (21 x 22 x 55 cm), so it takes some storage space.

Who it suits

It suits home mechanics and owners of boats, motorcycles, small engines and garden equipment who change fluids themselves. It is also useful for engines where a drain plug is hard to reach.

What to check before you buy

  • Tube fit: make sure one of the tubes will pass through your engine's dipstick tube, and that the depth is enough.
  • Oil temperature: extraction usually works best when oil is warm and flows well, but follow the manual about handling hot fluid.
  • Pneumatic needs: check what compressor and connector the pneumatic mode requires.
  • Manufacturer advice: some engines are meant to be drained from the bottom, so check the vehicle handbook.
  • Capacity: the tank holds 6.5 litres, so check it covers your engine's oil volume or empty it in stages.
  • Cleaning and disposal: plan for a container, wipes and a recycling point.
