The VEVOR 200 mil sound deadener is a set of self-adhesive butyl mats for lining the metal panels of a car. The idea is to cut down on road noise and panel vibration inside the cabin. Here is how the material is built and what to know before starting an installation.
What sound deadening mats do
Large flat metal panels, such as doors, floors and the roof, vibrate as you drive. That vibration turns into a drone or rattle you hear inside. A damping mat adds mass and a soft layer to the panel, so it vibrates less. VEVOR says its mat reduces how much interior noise gets through and isolates the various noises produced while driving.
A 3-in-1 layered build
VEVOR describes the mat as a composite of several layers:
- a low-air-permeability butyl rubber surface, 80 mil thick;
- heat-resistant aluminium foil;
- 120 mil high-density foam;
- a strong adhesive backing.
Together these make up the total thickness of 200 mil (5.1 mm). The brand says this combination offers soundproofing along with heat insulation, waterproofing and fire resistance. As a general rule, butyl damps vibration, while foam helps absorb airborne sound, and the foil layer reflects heat.
Coverage and sheet size
Each sheet measures 9.76 x 15.39 inches (about 24.8 x 39.1 cm). A set contains up to 24 pieces, giving coverage of up to 25 square feet (about 2.3 square metres). VEVOR says that's enough for both small and large vehicles. Whether it covers a whole car depends on the vehicle and which panels you treat. Doors and floor panels use up material quickly, so measure your target areas first.
The sheets are cut-to-size friendly: the brand says you can cut them or combine them to suit your own needs. Kitchen scissors won't do this well, so plan on a sharp utility knife.
Installing it in four steps
The mats have a strong self-adhesive backing, so no extra adhesive is needed. You peel off the backing and press the mat onto the panel. VEVOR recommends a rolling tool for a firmer bond, and notes it's not included. The metal should be clean, dry and free of grease before you start, because adhesive sticks poorly to dirty surfaces.
Size and weight
The package measures about 9.8 x 15.4 x 0.1 inches in the listing and weighs about 2 lb (0.9 kg). This is the size of a single sheet, and the set's total weight will depend on the number of pieces.
Who it suits
It suits DIY car owners who want a quieter cabin and are willing to remove trim and panels to reach bare metal. It could also be used in other vehicles where a rattly panel is the problem, though the listing frames it around cars.
What to check before you buy
- Area to cover: measure the panels so that 25 square feet is enough.
- Surface: the metal needs to be clean, dry and free of wax or oil.
- Temperature: adhesive generally sticks better on a warm day, so check the manual's advice.
- Tools: buy a roller and a sharp knife.
- Trim removal: be sure you can take off and refit interior trim without damaging clips.
- Wiring and airbags: keep clear of sensors, wiring, drain holes and airbag components, and follow your vehicle's manual.
