The VEVOR JL-TB17S-1 is a black steel underbody tool box measuring 18 x 12 x 14 inches. It mounts out of the way on a truck, trailer, van or similar vehicle, and gives you a lockable place to keep tools and equipment, so the cab and bed stay clear.

Materials and finish

VEVOR says the box is made from impact-resistant galvanized steel with a powder-coated finish. In general, galvanizing adds a zinc layer that slows rust, and powder coating adds a tough painted surface over it. The body is seamlessly welded, which the brand says supports reliable outdoor use. The box weighs 19.6 lb (about 8.9 kg) empty, so a mounting point has to carry that plus whatever you load.

Sealing out weather

A full-perimeter rubber gasket seals the door, which VEVOR says helps block rain and dust. A gasket is a common feature on exterior boxes, as moisture is the main enemy of tools. Even so, no under-vehicle box is submerged-proof. If the vehicle crosses deep water or is pressure-washed, check the manual and dry the contents.

Lock and security

The box has a pry-resistant lock, with a 304 stainless steel latch and a dust cover over the lock core. Spare keys are included. A lock deters casual theft, though anything left in a vehicle is only as secure as the box and its mounting, so use proper hardware.

Handle, hinges and door

A recessed T-handle opens the door and sits flush when closed, so it is less likely to snag on anything. A galvanized steel cable limits how far the door opens. VEVOR also describes concealed hinges and fully wrapped edges that reduce scratches when you reach in.

Where it can be mounted

VEVOR lists mounting under trucks, in trailer beds, in van cargo areas, in gooseneck hitch areas, on SUV roofs and on jobsite carts. It describes the compact design as one that avoids overhang and ground contact. Mounting hardware and locations differ by vehicle, so check the frame, ground clearance and the manual's instructions.

Who it suits

It suits tradespeople, trailer owners, camping and overlanding vehicles, and anyone who wants tools or recovery gear in a locked box with a modest footprint. Larger tools may need a bigger box.

What to check before you buy

  • Interior space: compare the 18 x 12 x 14 in outside size with your tools, since the usable interior is smaller.
  • Mounting spot: confirm there is room and a strong enough surface, and that the box does not block lights, hitches or exhaust.
  • Weight: add the box's 19.6 lb to the load of tools and check your vehicle's limits.
  • Hardware: see what comes in the box and whether you need separate bolts or brackets.
  • Upkeep: lubricate the lock occasionally and inspect the gasket.
  • Local rules: check regulations on items fixed under a vehicle.
