The TOPDON JS2000Pro, also known as the JumpSurge 2000, is a portable jump starter for 12V vehicles. It lets you start an engine with a flat battery without a second car, and it doubles as a power bank and a flashlight. TOPDON rates it at 2000 peak amps, with up to 40 jump starts on one charge.
2000 peak amps and engine size
Jump starters are sold by peak amps, the largest burst of current the pack can deliver for a moment. The current an engine draws while cranking is lower than that, and it rises with engine size, cold weather and a weak battery.
TOPDON lists the JS2000Pro for 12V gasoline engines up to 8.0 litres and diesel engines up to 6.0 litres. Diesels generally need more cranking power than gasoline engines of the same size, which is why their limit is lower. Besides cars, TOPDON names trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, ATVs, lawnmowers, snowmobiles and boats, all with 12V batteries.
Boost mode for fully drained batteries
Smart jump starters usually wait to detect a battery before sending power through the clamps. A fully drained battery may not register, so the JS2000Pro has a boost mode for that case. TOPDON's instructions are to make sure the clamps are connected properly first, then press boost. If the connection is right, the light turns solid green and you can start the engine right away. Read these steps in the manual before you need them.
Smart clamps and listed protections
The smart clamps have 10 built-in protections, including against reverse polarity, short circuits and overcurrent, and an LED blinks to warn of misuse. Reverse polarity means attaching the clamps to the wrong terminals, positive to negative. TOPDON lists UL 2734 certification for the unit. As with any jump starter, follow the manual and your vehicle's own guidance on where to connect the clamps.
Power bank, 12V output and flashlight
The JS2000Pro has three outputs: an 18W USB PD port, a 5V/2A USB port and a 12V/10A DC output. The DC output can run 12V in-car appliances; 12 volts at 10 amps works out to up to 120 watts. TOPDON says a full charge can recharge a phone about four times, a tablet twice or headphones around 40 times.
The built-in 300-lumen LED flashlight has steady, SOS and strobe modes, useful for working under a hood at night or signalling at the roadside.
Standby and what's in the box
TOPDON lists a standby time of over 180 days, which describes how long a charged pack can sit unused and still be ready. Even so, a jump starter is only useful if it's charged, so topping it up on a regular schedule is a good habit. Check the manual's guidance on storage temperatures if it will live in a vehicle.
The box holds the jump starter, heavy-duty clamps, a USB-C cable, a user manual and a hard, crush-resistant EVA carrying case with a zipper. A wall adapter is not included, so you'll need your own USB charger.
Who it suits
It suits drivers who want a backup in the trunk, and owners of trucks, boats, ATVs or lawnmowers with 12V batteries within the engine limits above.
What to check before you buy
- Your engine: a 12V system within TOPDON's 8.0-litre gasoline or 6.0-litre diesel guidance.
- Charger: a suitable USB wall adapter, since one isn't included; check the manual for the recommended input.
- 12V accessories: that anything you plan to run from the DC output draws no more than 10 amps.
- Keeping it ready: a reminder to recharge it regularly.
- Travel: lithium packs have airline limits, so check the rules before flying with it.
