The HPBS H3000 is a portable lithium jump starter for 12-volt vehicles. It is a compact battery pack with attached clamps that can restart an engine with a flat battery, without needing a second car or jumper cables. It also works as a power bank and a flashlight.

What 3000A peak means

The headline figure is 3000 amps of peak current. HPBS says that is enough for gas engines up to 10 litres and diesel engines up to 8 litres, and that the pack can start a vehicle in one to two seconds and give up to 60 jump-starts on a full charge. Peak current is a short-burst figure, and it varies in practice with temperature, the state of the pack and the condition of your car's battery. Larger engines, especially diesels, draw more current to turn over, so match the figure to your engine.

Protection features

HPBS lists ten safety features in the clamps, including protection against short circuits, over-temperature, over-charging, over-discharging and reverse polarity. Reverse-polarity protection matters because connecting the clamps to the wrong terminals is the commonest mistake with a jump starter. The brand also says the unit works in temperatures from -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C). Always read the manual and follow its connection steps.

The 3.0-inch LCD

A 3.0-inch screen shows the information you need, rather than a few indicator lights. That helps you see the pack's charge level before you try to start the car, and what is happening during use.

Power bank and flashlight

Besides starting engines, the H3000 is described as a 74Wh power bank. HPBS lists these ports:

  • Input: 18W via USB Type-C
  • Output: USB at 5V/2.4A, plus USB Quick Charge at 5V, 9V or 12V

A built-in LED flashlight has three modes: steady light, SOS and strobe. A torch is handy when you are checking under the bonnet after dark.

Size and what's in the box

The unit is about 8.1 x 3.5 x 1.6 inches (20.6 x 8.9 x 4.1 cm) and weighs 1.4 lb (about 0.64 kg), small enough for a glove box or door pocket. In the box are the jump starter, the smart jumper cables, a USB charging cable (no adapter), an EVA storage case and a manual. HPBS offers a two-year quality assurance.

Who it suits

It suits drivers who want a self-contained way to restart a car, including people who drive alone, on long trips or in cold weather, and households with more than one vehicle.

What to check before you buy

  • Engine size and fuel: compare the 10L gas / 8L diesel limits with your engine.
  • Voltage: it is designed for 12V vehicles only.
  • Charging: keep the pack charged, since lithium packs lose charge over time; check the manual for advice on how often.
  • Clamp connections: follow the manual's steps for connecting and removing the clamps.
  • Storage: read the manual on temperature limits for storing it in a car.
