The HPBS A1 is a portable jump starter for 12V vehicles with a built-in air compressor. It can start a vehicle with a flat battery without a second car, top up a soft tyre, charge a phone over USB and light up the roadside. Here is what its numbers mean and how to look after it so it's ready when needed.

What 5000A peak means

Jump starters are usually described by peak current, the largest burst of power the pack can deliver for a moment. HPBS lists 5000A peak for the A1. The current an engine actually draws while cranking is lower, and it depends on the engine's size, the temperature and how flat the battery is. Larger engines, diesels and cold mornings all need more.

HPBS rates it for gas engines up to 10.0 litres and diesel engines up to 8.0 litres, with up to 50 jump starts from a full charge. It's designed for 12V systems, and the listing says not to use it on engines larger than those limits. After a jump start, wait 30 seconds before trying again, so the pack doesn't overheat.

The built-in tyre inflator

The compressor reaches up to 150 PSI and stops automatically at the pressure you set. It has four preset modes and shows pressure in four units: PSI, kPa, bar and kg/cm².

With 30 litres per minute of airflow, HPBS says it takes a standard 195/65 R15 car tyre from 29 to 36 PSI in about a minute. It also inflates motorcycle and bike tyres, balls and swimming rings, using the pump tube and four air nozzles in the box, and doubles as a digital pressure gauge. Like most small compressors, it needs breaks: HPBS says to let it rest for 10 minutes after 10 minutes of continuous use.

Power bank and flashlight

The A1's 59.2Wh battery can charge phones and tablets over USB. The pack itself recharges through USB-C. Watt-hours measure stored energy; 59.2Wh is typically enough to recharge a smartphone a few times, depending on the phone and on conversion losses.

A 400-lumen LED flashlight has steady, SOS and strobe modes. SOS and strobe can signal for attention at the roadside.

Protections and smart clamps

HPBS lists 10 built-in protections, including reverse connection, overcurrent, overvoltage, overload and overcharge and over-discharge protection, and says the A1 meets UL, FCC and IEC standards. Reverse connection means the clamps are attached to the wrong battery terminals, positive to negative.

The smart jumper clamps signal errors with indicator lights and beeps. The listed working temperature range is -4°F to 140°F (about -20°C to 60°C). Read the manual's jump-starting steps, and your vehicle's own guidance, before you first need them.

Keeping it charged

A jump starter only helps if it's charged. HPBS recommends charging the pack fully when it first arrives, starting a vehicle when the battery is above 75%, and recharging it every 2-3 months to extend battery life.

In the box are the jump starter, a smart jumper cable, a USB-C charging cable, a storage case, a pump tube, four air nozzles and a user manual. HPBS lists a 24-month warranty.

Who it suits

It suits drivers who want one compact kit for a flat battery or a soft tyre, on road trips, daily commutes or in roadside emergencies, especially those without easy access to a second vehicle for jump-starting.

What to check before you buy

  • Your engine: confirm it's a 12V system within 10.0 litres for gas or 8.0 litres for diesel.
  • Your tyres: check your recommended tyre pressures, usually on a label inside the driver's door.
  • Charging: check which USB-C charger you'll use to recharge it, and plan to top it up every few months.
  • Storage in the car: check the manual's guidance if it will stay in a vehicle through hot summers or cold winters.
  • Travel: lithium battery packs have airline limits; check the rules before flying with it.

The short version

  • A portable 12V jump starter with 5000A peak, for gas engines up to 10.0 L and diesel up to 8.0 L, with up to 50 starts per charge.
  • A 150 PSI compressor with auto-stop, four presets and four pressure units; 30 L/min airflow.
  • A 59.2Wh battery for USB charging, recharged over USB-C, and a 400-lumen light with SOS and strobe.
  • 10 listed protections, smart clamps that beep on errors, and a 24-month warranty.
