The AINAVI CX10 is a 10-inch car subwoofer with its own amplifier built in, housed in a flat case that is only 3.2 inches (about 8 cm) tall. It is made to add low bass to a factory sound system without filling the trunk with a large box. Here is what its specs mean and what to think about before fitting one.

A subwoofer that fits under a seat

The case measures 13.5 x 10.2 x 3.2 inches (about 34 x 26 x 8 cm). AINAVI says that is slim enough to slide under the seat of most cars, pickups and SUVs, which keeps the cargo area free and the installation out of sight.

Factory speakers in most vehicles are small, and small drivers struggle to move enough air for deep bass. A dedicated subwoofer takes over the lowest notes, which typically lets the main speakers sound cleaner as well. A flat underseat design trades some of the output of a large enclosure for a much smaller footprint.

Power figures: RMS and peak

AINAVI rates the CX10 at 300W RMS and 1200W peak. RMS is the continuous power an amplifier can deliver over time, so it is the more useful number when comparing car audio gear; peak is a short burst figure. The brand also lists total harmonic distortion below 0.4% and a signal-to-noise ratio above 90dB, and says bass reaches down to 20Hz.

Inside, the listing images show a long-throw surround, a stiff cone, a 35mm voice coil and a 100mm magnet. Generally, a longer-throw surround lets the cone travel further, which helps a small driver produce more bass.

Controls for tuning the bass

The control panel on the side of the case holds the settings most installers reach for:

  • Low-pass filter, 50Hz to 150Hz: sets the frequency above which the subwoofer stops playing, so it blends with the main speakers instead of doubling them.
  • Bass boost, 0 to 12dB: lifts the low end for a fuller sound. Small amounts usually go a long way.
  • Input gain: matches the subwoofer's level to the signal coming from the head unit.
  • Phase switch (0° or 180°): helps the subwoofer's output line up with the other speakers in the cabin.

A wired bass volume controller is included, so the level can be adjusted from the driver's seat.

Working with a factory head unit

The CX10 accepts both high-level (speaker wire) inputs and low-level RCA inputs. High-level inputs matter because many factory radios have no RCA outputs; the subwoofer can take its signal from the speaker wires instead. The box also includes a high-to-low level converter, RCA and power cables, and mounting brackets with screws.

Like any powered subwoofer, it needs a power connection to the battery, a ground and a remote turn-on wire, and the panel has a fuse. Follow the manual for wiring and fuse sizing, and consider a professional installer if you are not comfortable working on a vehicle's electrical system.

Lighting and temperature range

Beat-sync RGB lighting around the driver pulses with the music, and the listing images show an app for setting the colours, brightness and a timer. AINAVI rates the subwoofer to work from -20°C to 70°C (about -4°F to 158°F), with thermal management meant to prevent overheating on long drives.

Who it suits

The CX10 suits drivers who want more low end from a factory system in a car, pickup or SUV and would rather not give up trunk or cargo space. It also suits vehicles where there is simply no room for a conventional subwoofer box, such as many pickups.

What to check before you buy

  • Space under the seat: measure the clearance and the rails, and allow for wiring.
  • Your head unit's outputs: check whether you will use RCA or high-level speaker inputs.
  • Installation: be ready for battery, ground and remote wiring, or plan for an installer.
  • Lighting: decide whether you want visible RGB lighting in the cabin.
  • What's in the box: cables, converter, bass controller and mounting hardware are listed.

The short version

  • A 10-inch powered subwoofer with a built-in amplifier in a 3.2-inch-tall case.
  • 300W RMS and 1200W peak by AINAVI's figures, with bass down to 20Hz.
  • A 50-150Hz low-pass filter, 0-12dB bass boost, gain and phase controls, plus a remote bass controller.
  • High-level and RCA inputs for factory or aftermarket head units.
  • Beat-sync RGB lighting and a rated range of -20°C to 70°C.
